ROCHE , COSTA DE LA LUZ

The modern beachfront development of Urbanisacion Roche is located on the Costa de la Luz, between the coastal conurbations of Novo Sancti Petri and Conil de la Frontera. It is about 15km northwest of Conil.
This private residential development is part of Conil, and its beach can only be easily accessed by those staying in the urbanisation due to parking. Facilities include tennis, paddle and volleyball courts, swimming pools, restaurants, gardens and children’s play areas.
Torre del Puerco, a 19th-century coastal defence tower, marks the northern limit of Roche, and its southern point is Cabo Roche, or Calas de Roche, a series of red cliffs which shelter many small coves (calas). Slightly tricky access – long, steep steps down to the beach – means they’re less crowded in the summer months. Parking is available on the local road and access to the top of cliffs path used by walker and cyclists is provided by board walks. The secluded location of the Calas de Roche means they’re also popular with naturists.
These are some of the calas, starting from the Conil end: Cala Tio Juan de Medina, Cala del Pato, Cala del Frailecillo, Cala del Aspero y Cala Encendida.

CADIZ CATHEDRAL

Cadiz Cathedral, also known in Spanish as Catedral Nueva ("New Cathedral") was built in the 18th century in the High Baroque style. Cadiz is located in the sunny region of Andalusia in southern Spain.

History of Cadiz Cathedral

The cathedral took 116 years to complete, and the Neoclassical style was incorporated towards the end of construction. Massive and much-needed restoration work has recently been completed.

What to See at Cadiz Cathedral

Located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, the huge edifice is decorated entirely in stone, with no gold in sight. It is topped by a yellow tiled dome that adds a Moorish feel to the cathedral. Visitors can climb to the roof for a closer look at the dome and a fine view over Cadiz to the sea.

In the atmospheric crypt is the tomb of Manuel de Falla (1876-1946), the great composer of such Andalusia-inspired works as Nights in the Gardens of Spain. The cathedral museum (entry included with cathedral admission) has exhibitions of the city of Cadiz as well as religious paintings and sculptures.

CADIZ CARNIVAL

As one of Spain's major ports during the 16th century, Cadiz copied the carnival of Venice, a city with which it had much trade, and since then it has become the liveliest and most dazzling carnival town in mainland Spain, famous for its amusing and creative characters and satirical song groups.
Cádiz is home to mainland Spain's premier carnival. In fact, numerous groups and associations throughout the city - along with the city hall, of course - spend the entire year preparing for the next carnival. Such dedication does, therefore, deserve more than just a weekend of festivities, which is why this most ancient of European cities keeps the celebration going for at least a good 10 days.

FISHING IN ANDALUCIA

.The Atlantic and Mediterranean shorelines are ideal for fishing and many of the local marinas provide everything required for a day of open sea fishing.
A maritime recreational fishing licence (1st and 3rd Class) is required for fishing from the shore or from a boat near the coast. Once obtained, it can also be used in other regions of Spain. It is obtainable from the offices of the Delegación Provincial de la Conserjeria de Agricultura y Pesca. There is one office in each of the provincial capital cities.
Fishing for swordfish is a spectacular experience and has been immortalised in several feature films. You can try your hand at this sport from July to September off the coasts of Almería, Granada and Málaga, as well as in the Bay of Cádiz.
There is also tunny fishing in the open sea. The tunny swim so near the surface in the summer that they become visible. There are tunny fishing grounds at Barbate, Zahara or Conil in Cádiz and Isla Cristina in Huelva. Likewise, frigate mackerel, big toothed pampano, blue fish, sea bass and spotted bass on the Atlantic coast and bogue - a kind of bream, corvina, gilthead, grouper and leer fish, as well as some 150 types of shark, provide good entertainment. True enthusiasts will compete for various trophies awarded by competitions organised throughout summer. Amateurs can also try their luck as well; enquire at your local marina. The World Coast Fishing Championships are held at Adra (Almería).
Manilva is a popular area for fishing from the sea off the coast due to the abundance of marine life found in this area. This is mainly due to the constant in flow of water from the Atlantic Ocean to make up for the evaporation from the Mediterranean. This mix of waters seems to create an ideal environment to encourage marine life to flourish.

Bottom fishing off the coast of Manilva is also very popular with some fantastic grounds only 10 minuets from the Port of Duquesa species such as sea Breams, Dorado, Wrasse, Snapper, Grouper, Tope and Eels. Conger and Moray are also caught here and there are jigging & feather pulls for squid and mackerel.
Trolling or game fishing is possibly the most exciting type of fishing to be enjoyed in this area with Bass, Bonito, Mahi Mahi (Dolphin Fish) and Swordfish available for the catching. Blue fin Tuna are also frequent in these waters. There is a spring run of small Tuna about 60 lb then during August, September and October the larger tuna (150lb plus) frequent local waters. Shark fishing is also popular with plenty of blue shark and the odd Mako being caught.

Fishing in rivers and dams in Andalucía is also a popular sport, where trout, pike and black bass are found, as well as the ciprinidae family, including barbel and carp. Trout fishing is the most attractive to anglers, owing to its difficulty, no doubt. There are 64 fishing preserves in the Nature Parks of Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas and in Sierra Nevada
RIO FRIO

Rio Frio merits a special mention. It is a small town between Málaga and Granada, just off the motorway in the foothills of the Sierra de Loja. Trout fishing here is recorded back as far as 1664, and in recent times there have been record catches with brown trout up to 5.2kg. The season lasts all year round here. Rio Frio is a popular tourist destination, with barbecued trout served at the many roadside restaurants.

MARBELLA GASTRONOMY

Marbella offers an exquisite gastronomy that represents the Mediterranean, that goes from light dishes where it’s worth mentioning the salads and the olive oils, to the most typical dishes in Malaga without forgetting, of course, the sea food.

In Marbella we’ll find top quality wines like Rioja or Ribera del Duero. If as well as a good wine, you also want a romantic dinner, Puerto Banus hosts a wide vide variety of restaurants and places where to enjoy a cocktail or a mixed drink after dinner.

If you like listening to music during dinner you must go to “La Plaza” where you’ll enjoy an exquisite Mediterranean meal accompanied by a flamenco show. There are also other places like “El Patio de los Perfumes”, situated in the old quarter of Marbella, where we can also enjoy a flamenco dance show while we eat.

Gastronomy in Marbella
Marbella is a municipality by the sea and also by the mountain, which is why it bases its gastronomy in fish and mountain products. Typical dishes like ‘gazpacho’ and ‘ajoblanco’ are a must in a Marbella kitchen, specially during the hot days of summer, or if on the other hand we visit Marbella during the winter, we can enjoy an exquisite ‘sopa campera’ (countryside soup).

Recipe of the 'Sopa Campera'

Its main ingredients are tomatoes, onions, garlic, peppers, green asparagus, stale bread, and sometimes seafood can also be added, depending on the chef as well as the taste of each person.

Malaga style Salad

A light salad of potatoes and olive oil, that also has tomatoes, peppers, onions and either tuna or cod (the original is with cod).

Salmorejo

Also known as ‘Porra Antequerana’, it’s a thick creamy soup similar to gazpacho made mainly with tomatoes, stale bread, garlic, olive oil, hardboiled egg, serrano (parma) ham, peppers and onions, a healthy delight that’s very recommendable.

Cold soups

Both, the Gazpacho, which is a typical Andalusian product, and the Ajoblanco, are two cold soups that you must try if you visit southern Spain. Made with natural products like the Salmorejo, the Gazpacho, without being as thick, is a very healthy cold soup to have at any time of the day, even as a refreshing drink

GROCERS AND BRITISH SUPERMARKETS IN COSTA DEL SOL AND GIBRALTAR

You can find a number of British grocers on the Costa del Sol and in Gibraltar, to satisfy that hankering for Branston Pickle, Jammy Dodgers, or crumpets.
There are two branches of Iceland (referred to as Overseas): in Puerto Banus - Centro Comercial La Alzambra in Nueva Andalucia, just off the A7 motorway, and in Mijas - Parque Empresarial Miramar.
As well as the frozen goods, including party food and desserts, these stores have fresh bread and dairy, tinned goods, jam, chutney, cereals, baking ingredients; British press, stationery and greetings cards (hard to find in Spain); and some Waitrose products.
Opening hours (both branches): Monday to Saturday 9am-9pm.
In the vast La Cañada Shopping Centre, in Marbella, you can find Marks&Spencers (on the first floor). It's the only branch of the store in Spain, and it opened in November 2009. The food hall is located at the back of the store, and has a representative, rather than comprehensive, selection of their products, with snacks, cakes and biscuits most in evidence.
Opening hours: Monday to Saturday, 10am-10pm.
For a big shop, it is worth heading into Gibraltar (don't forget your passport, and avoid the queues by arriving at around 11am, after the morning rush hour but before lunch time) to go to Morrisons. This is located on Westside Road, in the modern offices area outside the town centre.
Inside the supermarket itself, you can find an excellent fruit and vegetables section, including some organic produce; ready meals, pasta and pizza, including freshly made; bakery, fish and meat counters (British produce); deli counter, with cheese, olives and cold meats; baby food, including organic; a good selection of shampoos and bath products; household items, such as baking tins; cakes and biscuits; and well-priced wine (non-Spanish wine is very expensive in Spain).
There's also a café, pharmacy (handy for cheap paracetamol), excellent area with stationery, magazines and books.
Opening hours: Monday to Saturday, 8am-10pm, Sunday 8am-8pm.
Gibraltar also has a Marks & Spencers, with a small but well-stocked food hall. In addition, there is the recently opened Eroski City located near the entrance to the former airport terminal, which sells a large selection of British produce including a good section of Waitrose products.

CABO DE GATA, ALMERIA

The Cabo de Gata natural park, in Almeria offers some truly spectacular beaches. A couple of which are regularly voted as being the ‘best in Spain.’

This windswept, barren and desert landscape has set the scene for numerous Hollywood classics such as the “Good, the bad and the ugly,” “A fistful of dollars,” “Indiana Jones - the last Crusade” amongst others.

Cliff diving from La Cala del Cuervo

Ok you don’t have to dive, but jumping from the cliffs is a thrill not to be missed. There are jumps up to a good 15m.

Where to go? Las Negras from San Jose. Just before getting into the village of Las Negras, there are signs for the campsite - Camping Las Negras - the road turns sharply rightwards and drops down to the beach.

From the little rocky beach that just sits just in front of the campsite, there’s a small path that leads up into the cliffs above. This is the path that eventually, after 1.5kms, leads to a beach called El Playazo. A beautiful walk.

Follow this path upwards, you’ll quickly see an old tower, there are several smaller tracks that lead towards and beneath it. La Cala del Cuervo sits behind the tower on the first rocky outcrop. Any of these spots are perfect for diving.

The water is deep and the bed is sandy, in places. Always double check carefully where you are going to be landing. I suggest getting into the water with mask and making doubly sure you are jumping onto a sandy patch and that the water is deep enough. One important point to bear in mind is always make sure you can get out of the water easily after jumping. Its a long swim back to the beach.

Best snorkeling spot - Los Escullos beach - Cala Hermanicas

All of Cabo de Gata offers fantastic snorkelling, the caves and underwater rock formations just next to Los Escullos are particularly beautiful and are one of the main destinations for scuba divers.

The water quality, flora and fauna are second to none. The deep water enables the dive boats to get in close. For people snorkelling, its an easy enough spot to get to, with a little walk and a short swim. You snorkel over layered rocky platforms, with huge drops between the platforms. The water can get very deep very quickly - up to 40m. Although close to the coast, its important to be a confident swimmer and its always best to swim with a friend. Getting there is straightforward.

Drive past Los Escullos heading south-west in the general direction of San Jose, the coastal road quickly becomes a track. Its passable in a normal car with care. Keep driving as far as you can. There’s a large two-storey ruin on the path to San Jose, park here (or as near as you can get). Follow this path upwards for about 500m, it eventually drops back down into La Cala Hermanicas, a rocky cove. Get into the water here and start exploring.

Best eats

Cabo de Gata can be expensive to eat out. The more popular villages, particularly the ones next to the beach can be overpriced. If looking for some fantastic home-cooked and very reasonably priced food - Bar La Plaza in the tiny village of  Fernan Perez is highly recommended.

ALMERIA

Almería is a province in the Andalusia region of southern Spain. Along its Mediterranean coast are volcanic cliffs, secluded coves, fishing villages and beach resorts. The region's sparsely populated interior consists largely of mountains and arid desert. The provincial capital, also called Almería, is a port town overlooked by La Alcazaba, a 10th-century Moorish fortress housing lush gardens and a museum.

MALAGA MOUNTAINS

Malaga Mountains
This natural park situated a few kilometres from the north of Malaga is considered the lung of the surrounding areas, a recommended place to go trekking with beautiful spots such as the 'salto de agua de Picapedreros' (the stonemason’s waterfall), remains of crops and buildings that show us the wine-producing history of this place.

This mountain range is made up of high and low hills parallel to the coast through where the river Guadalmedina flows. It was declared natural park in 1989 and is accessed via the C-345 road, also known as the ‘carretera de los montes’.

The Montes de Malaga area was reforested with pine trees to avoid floods, as these floods occurred pretty often since they chopped down the large forests during the middle ages after the Castilian conquest, as they wanted to increase the area of cultivations.

From the Montes de Malaga there are breath-taking views, like the scenery one can enjoy from the mirador del Cochino (the pig’s viewpoint), that has a beautiful panoramic view over the Costa del Sol and, with a bit of luck, from where we can spot birds of prey like the booted eagle or the short-toed eagle.

The park is dominated by Aleppo pines, that were planted between 1930 and 1950 in an attempt to stop the continuous floods that have devastated Malaga for centuries. In the 15th century, the existing trees back then were mainly replaced for olives and grapevines, which caused since 1544 a series of floods that were stopped thanks to the aforementioned reforestation.

To know more visit our page with the history of the Mountains of Malaga or the typical gastronomy.

Trekking routes
There are various trekking routes to choose from in the Montes de Malaga, through which one can admire the beauty of the scenery, the natural environment with its abundant flora and fauna. It has camping areas and the most important paths that we can tour are: Picapedreros, Cerrado, Las Contadoras, Pocopan y Torrijos.

The park is easily accessible and is located near other coastal towns. During the period of rain we’ll be able to contemplate beautiful waterfalls in Picapedreros, or simply enjoy the fantastic views of the entire Costa del Sol that can be witnessed from the park.

As well as trekking, we can also visit some of the park’s surrounding villages like Colmenar and Casabermeja, where we’ll enjoy the typical Andalusian architecture , some of the typical dishes and specially the popular cemetery in Casabermeja declared an Artistic Historical Monument.

Montes de Malaga fauna
To a large extent, the fauna of the Montes de Malaga is nocturnal. This is one of the few places in Andalusia with a significant population of chameleons. Plus, we’ll also find other reptiles such as spine-footed lizards, ocellated lizards and geckos.

Amongst the mammals that we can find in the area, there are wild boars, badgers, foxes, polecats, weasels, beech martens, rabbits, wildcats and squirrels.

From the viewpoints we can observe birds of prey like the booted eagle, the short-toed eagle, buzzards and goshawks, all of which breed in this area.

MALAGA CITY BEACHES

Malaga is getting fashionable. Headlines heralding Malaga city as ‘the’ holiday destination for 2014 seem to be popping up almost daily. More and more people are beginning to realise that there is so much more to Malaga than just an international airport. A place to quickly drive through as you head onto the more popular Costa destinations.

Culturally and historically speaking, the city is a gem. It is home to some of the best museums in Spain, great restaurants, fantastic tapas bars and some really fun things to see and do.

What about the more traditional attractions? The ones we more commonly associate with the Costa del Sol. The sun and the beaches.

Here’s a guide to Malaga's city beaches. None of them would ever make a best beaches in Andalucia list, but they all have their own special charm and if looking to break up a morning’s sightseeing and have a quick swim to cool off, you are spoilt for choice.

Being a coastal city, a beach is never far. Nearly all the ones mentioned below are within easy walking distance from the centre of Malaga.

These are not your typical tourist beaches. You won’t find row after row of sunbed rentals and the usual bucket and shade crew, in fact, you’ll be hard pressed to hear anything other than Spanish on them. Which just adds to their appeal. Many of them are also home to some reasonably priced and good restaurants.

According to the official town hall website, there are 15 beaches within Malaga’s city limits. Several of them have been merged into one in this guide. We focused on the more popular, more accessible beaches and the ones that are worth seeing.

Playa del Campo de Golf - San Julián

Sitting directly behind the golf course that belongs to one of Malaga’s two Parador Hotels, the Parador Malaga Golf Hotel, you have an expanse of beach, that is known as the Playa del Campo de Golf - San Julián. A popular spot with kite surfers. Wind permitting, you can see dozens of sails in the air from afar.

The sandy beach is long, approximately 2,250m and extends from Los Alamos to the Guadalhorce river. Parking is never a problem, even at the height of summer.

Playa de Guadalmar

The Guadalmar beachsits adjacent to the San Julian beach, directly behind the urbanisation with the same name. The beach is approximately 450m in length and runs right up to the Guadalhorce river estuary. Sections of it are frequented by naturists, normally around the sand dunes closer to the river estuary. In fact, its Malaga city’s only official nudist beach.

If in the area, a visit to the neighbouring Guadalhorce river estuary natural area is recommended. On both the San Julián and the Guadalmar beaches there are showers, toilets and beach bars. The Chiringuito Servando is probably the best. One important point to bear in mind, is the area sits right under the flight path into Malaga's airport, so expect plenty of low-flying aircraft.

Playa de San Andrés

The San Andrés beach is forever ingrained in Malaga’s history as being the spot of the execution of General Torrijos, Boyd and fellow revolutionaries in 1831. The tragic event has been commemorated by the obelisk in Plaza de la Merced.

History aside, it is an increasingly popular beach, with children’s playgrounds, grass areas and all amenities. The dark sand beach is 650m in length and approximately 50m wide. The chiringuito Restaurante Gutiérrez Playa is probably the best around.

Playa de la Malagueta

The large man-made beach sits adjacent to the neighbourhood with the same name. Bars, restaurants, children’s playgrounds, shops, every convenience is at your fingertips. Its a very short walk into the city centre. The beach is popular with local Spanish families and gets crowded during the summer months.

There are ample bars and restaurants to choose from, including the exclusive La Moraga restaurant. For a more reasonably priced and traditional option, the Chiringuito Tropicana, on neighbouring La Caleta beach is recommended. The beach is 1,2km in length and about 45m in width.

Playa de la Malagueta is the first beach in the world to offer a new lifesaving device. The 'Punto Naranja,' literally translated as the 'Orange Point.' After extensive testing, three devices have been in operation since the beginning of April 2014.

The 'orange point' is a concrete structure that houses an electric motor and 400 metres of rope. One end is attached to a harness and the other back into the base. Lifeguards and members of the public can quickly attach someone who is in danger of drowning and have them pulled back to safety, quickly and effortlessly. The machines are also 'Smart' with an integrated GPS system that can pinpoint accidents to the emergency crews.

Playa de la Caleta

One of Malaga’s most popular city beaches, La Playa de la Caleta sits between Playa de la Malagueta and Baños del Carmen, on the Pablo Picasso promenade. A large beach, its about 1km long and 25m wide. A popular spot with local Malagueños. Beach volley.

Baños del Carmen

Baños del Carmen was home to Malaga’s first spa. The Balneario Nuestra Señora del Carmen was opened to the public on the 16th of July 1918, marking its place in Spanish history as being the first public spa to allow mixed bathing - an almost revolutionary concept at the time.

The much loved Malaga landmark has been fiercely protected by local Malagueños throughout the years. All attempts to develop this prime piece of real estate have been successfully resisted. Although slightly run down and decrepit, its still a great place to wander around and have a bite to eat.

The beach itself is small and popular with university students and Malaga’s younger crowd. The chiringuito, Natural&Mente offers some fantastic Moroccan dishes (try the vegetable couscous). It also provides the setting for many summer parties and concerts. Topless sunbathing, deep water…..its not an ideal family beach, but a great place to visit, have a drink and watch the sunset. The smallish sandy cove is 550m in length and 15m in width.

Playa de Pedregalejo - Las Acacias

Pedregalejo is one of Malaga’s most happening neighbourhoods. Clean, friendly and traditional. A visit is highly recommended. Although predominantly Spanish, several large language schools ensure there's a steady stream of foreign language students gracing its shores every year. Home to plenty of good bars and restaurants.

The seafront in Pedregalejo is also a popular spot for nightlife. Monday nights are traditionally the busiest, with ‘ladies' night,’ in most bars and nightclubs. The beach itself is 1,2km in length and around 20m in width.

Two restaurants that are highly recommended are the Maricuchi and El Caleno. A couple of Malaga's best.

Playa de El Palo

El Palo is Pedregalejo’s working class neighbour. The stretch of beach that makes up El Palo (an extension of Pedregalejo) is popular with locals and foreign language students.

The Paseo Marítimo is a hive of activity, with bars, restaurants and chiringuitos. All facilities offered, including showers and toilets. You can also rent parasols and sun loungers in most places. The beach is 1,2km in length and 25m in width.

Playa El Dedo

Going further eastwards from El Palo. The next expanse of beach is known as El Dedo (the finger). It extends up to the marina at El Candado. Very similar in layout and facilities as on the neighbouring beaches. There are ample bars, chiringuitos and restaurants along the paseo.

There is one in particular, that should be high on any visitor’s wishlist, El Tintero, which has become an institution over the years. Plates of fish and salads are shouted out by waiters, you just point and choose the ones you want. People are charged by the plate at the end. The beach itself is 550m in length and around 25m wide.

Playa El Candado

El Candado is a small exclusive beach that is linked onto the Club Náutico El Candado and the El Candado marina. Only 200m in length and 30m in width.

The restaurant Candado beach has terraces and tables backing onto the beach and serves gourmet traditional dishes. The food is fantastic, although can be a little pricey. The three course set menu at 18€ is a cheaper and better option.

Peñon del Cuervo

A famous Malagueño landmark. The Peñon (the rock) juts out to sea and is clearly visible from numerous spots in Malaga. A popular beach with the younger crowds. It sets the scene for numerous summer beach parties and barbecues, being far enough removed as to not cause problems for the neighbours. There is large picnic/BBQ area, parking and not much else. There are no restaurants and/or facilities. The nearest bars and restaurants are in neighbouring La Araña.

The beach is 450m in length and approximately 25m in width. A beautiful spot, the only blight on the landscape is cement factory just behind it. Notwithstanding, its one of the best beaches in the area.

Getting there is fairly tricky, you need to come off at the exit for the cement factory, double back on yourself and eventually go through a tunnel that leads back to the beach. If you get lost, ask….everyone in the area knows it.

If wanting to discover some of the beaches just outside of Malaga city's limits, the beach at neighbouring La Cala del Moral is recommended. Stay on the old N340 heading eastwards, driving past the cement factory and the beach at La Araña. Take the next exit off for La Cala del Moral. The beach was awarded a Blue Flag in 2013 and makes a great place to spend the day.

FUENGIROLA BEACHES

Fuengirola has the longest seaside walkway in Spain at 7 km in length, and a series of great beaches stretch alongside. Starting at El Ejido in the west and ending at Torreblanca in the east, this beachside walkway is officially known as El Paseo Maritimo Rey de España, which can be directly translated to “the King of Spain’s seaside promenade”.

Lined with palm trees, flowers, and endless stretches of sandy beaches, the boardwalk is a beautiful place for a sunset (or sunrise) walk or jog. In the harbour, there are lots of great restaurants and cocktail bars to try, and it’s the perfect place to hang out and watch the fishing boats go out to sea.

There are seven main beaches in Fuengirola: El Ejido, Santa Amalia, San Francisco, Los Boliches, Las Gaviotas, Carvajal, and Torreblanca. On most you will find everything from cool beach bars, sand sculptures, shops, recreational areas, opportunities to try water sports, and no shortage of sun beds. There are also bike lanes that line the boardwalk for easy access for cyclists.

This 2km beach is bounded at the west by the Torre de la Sal headland and runs to the next headland at Bahia Dorada; it is about 40m wide. Not overly busy, this is mainly used by the residents of the urbanizations that straddle of the coast road.  There is a chiringuito at the western end near Torre del Sal. There is a pedestrian promenade for part of this long beach and little dedicated car access except roads in the urbanizations.

About halfway along is a large rock called Piedra Paloma (Dove's Rock) just out to sea. This marks Playa Piedra Paloma, which is actually in the municipal district of Casares and in 2016 became an authorised Dog Beach replacing the Playa del Sal dog beach. Access to Playa Piedra Paloma is via the Urbanizacion Casares del Mar.

PLAYA BAHIA DORADA

This beach is similar to the others in the area. Bounded by the two headlands it is about 700m long and 40m wide. The established urbanization Bahia Dorada fronts the beach. A seafront promenade was constructed recently, to protect from land erosion in the winter storms. There is no car access to the beach. On the Bahia Dorada headland at the east and interestingly within the estate is an old circular watchtower. (Torre Vigia)

PLAYA ARROYO VAQUERO

This beach is to the east of the Bahia Dorada headland, and where the Arroyo Vaquero river reaches the sea. The car access is a roundabout into the Fuerte Estepona Suites Hotel which fronts this beach Upon entering the turn right  and wind your way through the houses near the Arroyo Vaquero river. The beach is about 1km long and 50m wide and is quiet, with ample parking space and a chiringuito. Access is also provided on the other or west side of the Fuerte Hotel.

PLAYA COSTA NATURA

The beach is a continuation of Playa Arroyo Vaqueros, but the 500m section in front of the Costa Natura resort is officially classified as 'naturist beach'. Costa Natura, Spain's first purpose-built naturist complex, is located to the east of the town at km151. The complex is for members only, but temporary membership is available for touring naturists and the uninhibited or curious. The 400m stretch of beach is, of course, open to all members of the public. You can rent sunbeds and a small kiosk sells soft drinks. Parking is available on the service road to the south of km151 on the coast road. Walk around the Costa Natura urbanization down to the beach.

PLAYA GUADALABON

This is the name given to various stretches of beach in the area of the river Guadalabon. Some areas, such as that in front of Gran Hotel Elba (with promenade walkway), or in front of H10 Estepona Palace Hotel, are wider, but much of the rest of this 2km seafront is not overly interesting.

PLAYA EL CRISTO

Situated just outside the town of Estepona, to the west of the Marina, El Cristo beach is situated in a delightful sheltered cove, ideal for children, with two chiringuitos. Its ideal location means longer hours of sunshine, making it a particular favourite with serious sunbathers. This beach has become increasingly popular in recent years and tends to get quite crowded on summer weekends. It has a good atmosphere with music playing at two of the beach bars. The cove and the outer protection wall ensure the sea is warmer than the surrounding waters. It slopes very gently and is very safe for children. There is a lifeguard station and showers in the summer. There are two good beach bars, the trendy Havana Beach and the moore traditional Chiringuito Lolailo.  Car access is by a narrow, steep road from a roundabout to the west of Estepona marina or town. Summer parking at the back of the beach is chaotic, so it's best to continue a little further to the open ground, where is always ample parking and some wild camping. The car exit route is in this direction via Estepona Marina. Its high standards of cleanliness and excellent facilities have been recognised by the European Blue Flag award.

PLAYA LA RADA

Right in the centre of Estepona is the town's most popular beach, La Rada. It is long and backed by a modern seafront promenade for the entire length (2.6km). Chiringuitos (beach bars), are located all along the seafront and serve traditional seaside fare, such as paella and fresh sardines, as well as a choice of international-style dishes. The Marina and lighthouse are located at the west end of La Rada beach. The entire length of beach runs parallel to the ‘old coast road'. There are two large underground car parks here; otherwise parking can be found in the town. Disabled access is better here than at other nearby beaches. The seafront prom and the beach terminate at the eastern end with a headland known as Punta de la Plata.

PLAYA PUNTA DEL PLATA

A 4km stretch of narrow low-quality beach, stretching from the Punta del Plata headland which terminates La Rada beach the west to El Padron Beach to the East.

PLAYA PUNTA PINILLOS
This is another name for the beach slightly to the east of Punta del Plata.

PLAYA EL PADRON

The popular beach located just to the east of the Rio Padron, near the Kempinski Resort Hotel. The beach has a large car park and two beach bars, making it particularly popular in the summer. Laguna Village is located here, a small upmarket Balinese-style shopping centre with fashion and decoration shops, open 11.00 to 20.00. A selection of restaurants includes Terra Sana, Camuri Grill, Carmen (traditional Spanish) with small roof terrace, La Pappardella (Italian), as well as tapas bar ¡Que Arte! and Spanish Star Cafe - restaurants are open 10.00 to 24.00. Also here is Puro Beach restaurant and beach club with large swimming pool, white sun loungers and fusion music DJ. Car Parking. Km 159. Its high standards of cleanliness and excellent facilities have been recognised by the European Blue Flag awar

ALTEA

ALTEA

Altea is without doubt one of the most charming towns to be found on Spain’s ‘White Coast’, located in the region of Alicante on the Costa Blanca. The town is just 11 kilometres north of Benidorm, yet the two resorts are worlds apart. Altea is similar to other Costa Blanca towns in that it has a new and an old neighbourhood. The old section is perched on top of a hill from where you will find really spectacular views.

All in all Altea is a pretty town, popular with both holidaymakers and  those fortunate enough to be able to live in the area; it has a slowly  growing community of multinational expatriates.

History

The name Altea derives from the Moors who conquered the region and named it Althaya, meaning health to all.

About town
Altea has excellent amenities, however, if you want all-night discos and bright city lights on your holiday, give Altea a miss. This town is a holiday haven for the more discerning tourist who will be captivated by its medieval cobbled streets, its picture book old quarter and the delights of its palm-fringed seafront promenade.

The ascent to the old section along steep slopes and stepped streets reveals a broad horizon at every turn and extends along the entire La Marina region. The silhouette of the Peñon de Ifach on one side and the Helade range on the other, frame the view of the sea, with the ever present gulls sweeping low over the town.

Excursions

Eight kilometres from Altea, heading inland, is Polop, a small town surrounded by orchards and pine groves, which is highly recommended for those who seek peace, quiet and cool summer nights.

From the Via Crucis which presides over the town, you can obtain superb views of the surrounding valleys, which owe their present appearance to the work of the Morisco farmers from many years ago.

Benidorm makes a great day out with its eclectic collection of bars, playgrounds and beaches and ferry rides to the Balearics can be made from nearby Denia.

Cuisine

As with most of this region, traditional rice dishes
are what you will find most on the Spanish menu. For international  cuisine, Benidorm is just a short drive.

Climate
Altea enjoys a privileged location and an excellent mild climate, with an average year round temperature of 18-20° C.

MALAGA AIRPORT TO MARBELLA BUSES

Malaga Airport to Marbella Bus timetable

The Avanza bus service in Marbella offers visitors and locals a reliable bus service across the Costa del Sol.  One of the most useful routes is the Malaga Airport - Marbella Bus station shuttle service.

These buses run like clockwork and are naturally a much cheaper alternative to a taxi costing from just €6.15 one way.  The "directo" bus travels on the toll road so it avoids much of the traffic on the slower coast road.  The service departs regularly from right outside arrivals in Malaga and then from the Marbella Bus station you can easily walk into the town centre or catch a taxi in the direction of your hotel, villa or apartment.

To give you an idea of the price of a taxi onwards to Puerto Banus from the bus station you would pay approx €11 - €14 during the day and after 10pm and over the weekends and holidays it costs around €15.

At the Malaga Aiport end you no longer pay the driver you must buy your ticket from an office outside the arrivals hall.  As you come out into the forecourt you will see a meeting point in front of you where you can go to pay.  The ticket office is on your left in the corner. If you are departing from Marbella you purchase your ticket at the station.

The journey time is just 40 minutes, longer if you don't take the direct option, and the buses are airconditioned so even in the hot summer months it is a comfortable ride.  They also now come with WIFI. My 60 year old parents are quite happy to use this service as well as me when fully loaded with cases and children so I can personally recommend it as a sensible option for most types of travellers.  You can also book and pay for a ticket in advance if you wish using the AvanzaBus website.

Departure times from Malaga airport weekdays
08.15, 10.15, 11.30, 12.00, 12.30, 14.15, 16.15, 18.00, 18.50, 20.15, 22.30

Departure times from Malaga airport weekends and public holidays
08.15, 10.15, 11.30, 12.30, 14.15, 16.15, 18.00, 18.50, 20.15, 22.30

The telephone number for the Marbella bus station is +34 952 764 401

The telephone number for the Portillo bus service is +34 902 143 144

There are also luggage lockers at the Marbella Bus station - two different sizes. They are on the right when you get off your bus and come into the bus station. You buy a token from a machine next to the lockers -one token costs €3 and the other costs €4.  You can leave your luggage there all day to go out and explore Marbella!  Make sure though that you take out everything that you need for the day, sunglasses, money, suntan lotion and so on because you cannot open your luggage locker twice! It will charge you to open the locker again if you try so don't get caught out.

If you'd prefer a more private transfer from the airport, Marbella Taxis offer taxi and minibus transfers to Marbella, Puerto Banus and all other locations on the coast. Call them on +34 951 247 149 or book online

MARBELLA NEW PORT, MALAGA

Marbella's fishing port, La Bajadilla, was planned to be transformed into a new sleek, high-tech marina, aiming squarely at the very top end of the market. It will considerably expand the capacity of the existing port, allowing more, and larger, luxury cruise-liners, as well as private yachts, to dock at the glamorous seaside town, favourite of celebs the world over.

Qatari Sheik, Abdullah Ben Nasser Al-Thani, who was also owner of Málaga Football Club, was to invest 400 million euros in the new port. The project features a circular pier with a 200-metre quay for cruise liners, a five-star hotel on the marina, as well as bars, restaurants, shops and supermarkets. All of this will revamp the eastern area of the city, bringing La Bajadilla in line with famous Puerto Banus in the west.
The project was being called the most important urban development in Marbella's history. Port Al-Thani, situated at the north-eastern entrance to the town, will more than double Bajadilla's current capacity. The marina will accommodate 860 boats, of varying sizes from 175-metre mega-yachts to smaller boats, while a 200-metre pier in the outer part of the marina, connecting directly with the inner harbour (see video, below), will allow three liners to dock and put passengers ashore in Marbella. The port will also have parking for more than 1,000 cars. Puerto Banus, currently one of the most fashionable ports in southern Spain, will be just the other side of town, with the equally desirable but more discreet Sotogrande, further west along the coast.

By 2012 certain planning step obligations had not been carried out and this has resulted in a number of fines imposed by the regional government. The Sheiks corporate capital investment has been reduced from 21m€ to 4m€ and a new plan was resubmitted EPPA the regional port authorty. It is assumed to be a fraction of the size as the one described above and shown in the promotional video. Marbella town council supports the project. Judging by the press stories of non cooperation it looks like the regional goverment is playing 'hard ball' with the investors who in turn a used to helpful treatment from authorities.

By 2015, the year of the project completion according to the original launch material, there was little prospect of the new port in the near future. The Malaga mercantile court has embargoed the company for unpaid architect bills. On the positive side the Consejería de Medio Ambiente renewed their permission as long as a canon was paid by 31 July 2016 and the works start 7 September 2017.

In early August 2016 the document and fee were not received by the Junta de Andalucia, Consejería de Medio Ambiente who anounced that they had served a cancelation notice on the consession.  Marbella town hall who held a nominal 4% shares in the development company has said that there are other promotors interested in a similar project.
