COSTA DORADA, SPAIN

La Costa Dorada (Daurada in Catalan) The 20 towns that make up the Costa Dorada cover a marine littoral 216 kilometers long, 786 hectares of spacious beaches with clean fine sand and transparent shallow water.

In between the sea and the mountain range there are wide areas filled with peaceful towns and farmlands, where vineyards, olive groves, carobs, hazel trees and almond trees grow, and occasionally even vegetable gardens. The whole area, between; hotels, camping sites and apartments, has capacity for over 500,000 tourists, and receives an average 3,500,000 visitors per year.

The large tourist centers along the beaches of the Costa Dorada have developed in recent times upon the old fisherman's quarters in old towns mainly dedicated to agriculture, and sometimes located atop the hills near the sea in order to protect themselves from attacks by corsairs and pirates in earlier centuries.

The proximity of these towns, many of them built around the silhouette of an ancient castle, contributes to balancing and humanizing the surroundings, and increases the possibilities of amusement and the use of all sorts of complimentary services for tourists.
This bucolic atmosphere contrasts with the urban dimension of the historical city of Tarragona, which deploys its splendid monumental collection that summarizes it millenary cultural evolution.

Inland one can easily reach places and towns with a great personality and historical interest (such as Reus, Valls, Montblanc, Tortosa) and great medieval monasteries: Poble, Santes Creus and Scala Dei, as well as picturesque landscapes (Prades, Siurana), rugged mountain ranges with big game reserves (Tivissa, Cardo and Ports de Tortosa), and the unique delta of the Ebro river, with its labyrinth of ditches and lagoons and the facilities it offers for wild fowl hunting.

Several areas with common features can be distinguished along the Costa Dorada. First of all there is the northern area, from Cunit to Mont-roig, with the widest beaches of all; then Vandellos, L'Ametlla de Mar and L'Ampolla, with narrower, steeper beaches, influenced by the nearby mountains; the Ebro delta, with long wide beaches and very fine sand typical of alluvial lands; and finally, from the delta to Les Cases d'Alcanar, long beaches of average width and clean heavy sand.

COSTA DA MORTE, SPAIN

Wild, windy and at times desolate, the Costa da Morte, west of A Coruña, is often passed over by tourists heading south to the beaches of the Rías Baixas. But while the Costa da Morte lacks both the climate and the infrastructure for large-scale tourism, it’s not nearly as overdeveloped as the regions to the south, while boasting similarly beautiful coves, tiny fishing villages huddled against the headlands, and forested mountain slopes aplenty.

Its fearsome name, which means Coast of Death, stems from the constant buffeting the shoreline receives from the Atlantic waves. The most notorious of the countless shipwrecks that litter the sea bed is the oil tanker Prestige, which snapped in two following a ferocious storm in 2002. Although 77,000 tonnes of crude oil were released into the ocean, barely a trace of oil remained just twelve months later.

The coast from Camariñas to Fisterra is the most exposed and westerly stretch of all. Ever since a Roman expedition under Lucius Florus Brutus was brought up short by what seemed to be an endless sea, it has been known as finis terrae (the end of the world), and it is not hard to see why. This is prime territory, however, for hunting percebes (barnacles), one of Galicia’s most popular and expensive seafood delicacies, which have to be scooped up from the very waterline. Collectors are commonly swept away by the dreaded “seventh wave”, which can appear out of nowhere from a calm sea.

Even where the isolated coves do shelter fine beaches, you will rarely find resort facilities. While the beaches may look splendid, braving the water is recommended for only the strongest of swimmers, and the climate is significantly wetter and windier here than it is a mere 100km or so further south

COSTA BRAVA , SPAIN

The Costa Brava

The Costa Brava is located in the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula, covering the coastal towns and villages of the beautiful province of Girona in Catalonia.

Many who do not known the region, think only of built up resorts such as Lloret de Mar and Blanes. The truth however, is that the Costa Brava is home to some of the most delightful towns, villages and beaches in Spain.

The Costa Brava has an intricate coastline of over 300 kilometres washed by the Mediterranean Sea, and backed by the high Pyrenean mountains. It is a diverse region of extraordinary natural beauty and has a very deep artistic and historical heritage.

History & Culture
The Costa Brava has for many years attracted the artistic and cultural community; its natural beauty giving inspiration to famous artists such as Salvador Dali, Joan Miro and Pablo Picasso.

The region is a wealth of architectural, monumental, cultural, artistic and gastronomic treasures. Romantic routes exist which trace the regions culture, heritage, sports and cuisine at a leisurely pace.

Languages
The two official languages are Catalan and Castilian. Most of the indigenous population speaks Catalan regularly, and the entire population understands and speaks perfect Castilian.

Towns and Villages of the Costa Brava
Roses is an essentially Mediterranean town with a notable tourist and seafaring tradition. The town itself dates back to the 8th century BC. It is located in a unique natural environment in the northern area of the Costa Brava, it is less than 30 km from the French border, 65 km from Girona and 160 km from Barcelona.

Once a small fishing town, the seaside resort of Blanes still retains some of its original charm; the resort boasts a four-kilometre stretch of coastline with wide sandy bays and small rocky coves, most of which are well served with water sports and other tourist facilities.

Tossa de Mar is a pretty town with cobbled streets, constructed around a magnificent ancient castle, located in the Spanish region of Catalonia on the Costa Brava. The beautiful mountainous hinterland with lush green valleys, gorges and natural springs creates a stunning backdrop. There is also a bustling beach life in this attractive resort, which appeals to couples and families alike.

Lloret de Mar is situated in the southern part of the Costa Brava, 70 kilometres to the north east of Barcelona. This is one of the Mediterraneans most popular resorts and certainly the liveliest holiday spot on this stretch of the Spanish coastline. The former fisherman’s village covers 48 square kilometres, and has five main beaches along a 7 kilometre of coastline.

Begur is a pretty medieval village with cobbled streets and whitewashed houses draping the hillside below the ruins of a stone castle.

The medieval town of Pals is located on the Costa Brava, to the east of the city of Girona.
Situated on top of a hill, overlooking Platja de Pals, this charming town with its cobbled streets, craft shops, traditional restaurants and bars is a great place to visit in Catalonia.

South east of Girona, roughly midway between Lloret de Mar and Begur, is the fabulous
beach-side resort of S'Agaro. Elegant S'Agaró sits alongside cosmopolitan Platja d'Aro, where a recognised circular route skirts the peaceful streets of the old town. Castell d'Aro is the historical centre, and has preserved all its medieval charm.

Calella de Palafrugell is an attractive resort, well known for its various rocky coves, sandy beaches and excellent fish restaurants. The area is becoming better known thanks to the annual International Jazz Festival held in the extensive gardens of Cap Roig, just to the south.

Beaches
The beaches of the Costa Brava vary from beautiful stretches of golden sand, to tiny coves, backed by pine-clad hillsides.

Salvador Dali was inspired by the picturesque coves which are typical of this coastal region, the spectacular scenery at Port Lligat inspired much of his work. The wonderful village of Cadaques, is home to the Cap de Creus Nature Reserve which forms a series of beautiful tiny unspoilt coves.

Cuisine
The gastronomy of the Costa Brava is rich and
varied. Principally it is the typical Mediterranean diet of fish and seafood with fresh vegetables, olives and olive oil rice and pasta.

We recommend that visitors try some traditional
Catalan dishes whilst on holiday, especially delicious are

Escudella I Carn D'olla, vegetable broth with pork, veal and chicken. Pa Amb Tomàquet,

simply rustic bread, can be toasted, rubbed with tomato pulp and dressed with oil and
salt; these delcious breakfast can also be served with ham, sausage or tortilla.

Coca is a very thin dough baked with onions,
peppers and other vegetables served with and meats, or fish (especially sardines).

Climate
In keeping with its geographical diversity, there are numerous climates and microclimates, depending on the altitude and the proximity of the sea. In general, the area enjoys a mild temperate and Mediterranean type climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild winters.

COSTA DE LA LUZ,SPAIN

The Costa de la Luz (Coast of Light) is the western part of the Andalucía coastline that faces out to the Atlantic. The sand is finer and a more golden colour than in the neighbouring Costa del Sol, to the east. This area of unspoiled beaches is known to savvy visitors for its hidden coves with crystal-clear turquoise waters, wide sweeps of soft sand and groovy bars, while the reliable onshore winds and waves attract windsurfers and kiteboarders; international competitions are regularly held in Tarifa.
Many of the beaches here are backed by sand dunes and pine trees, as this part of the coast has not seen the high-rise hotel development of other areas. The temperatures are slightly milder, although some areas can experience persistent breeezes.

The areas with cliffs and coves are generally found in the Cadiz part, near Conil and around the Campo de Gibraltar.
This coast is divided into two sections: Costa de la Luz (Huelva Province), which stretches from the Portuguese border eastwards to Donaña park and the mouth of the Guadalquivir River, and Costa de la Luz (Cadiz Province), from the Guadalquivir eastwards to Tarifa, the southernmost point of the European continent.

COSTA DEL SOL,SPAIN

The Costa del Sol comprising the coastal towns and communities along the coastline of the Province of Málaga.

The Costa del Sol is situated between two lesser known coastal regions, the Costa de la Luz and the Costa Tropical. Formerly made up only of a series of small fishing settlements, today the region is a world renowned tourist destination.

The Costa del Sol includes the city of Málaga and also the towns of Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Fuengirola, Mijas, Marbella, San Pedro de Alcántara, Estepona, Manilva, Casares, Rincón de la Victoria, Vélez-Málaga, Nerja, Frigiliana and Torrox.

The history of this coast, shaped by its location and the predominance of Málaga, spans about 2,800 years. The first inhabitants to settle here may have been the Bastuli, an ancient Celtiberian tribe. The Phoenicians founded their colony of Malaka here about 770 BC, and from the 6th century BC it was under the hegemony of ancient Carthage in north Africa. From 218 BC the region was ruled by the Roman Republic and then at the end of the 1st century it was federated with the Roman Empire.[1]

Under the rule of the Roman Republic, the Municipium Malacitanum became a transit point on the Via Herculea, which revitalised the city both economically and culturally by connecting it with other developed enclaves in the interior of Hispania and with other ports of the Mediterranean Sea.

The decline of the Roman imperial power in the 5th century led to invasions of Hispania Baetica by Germanic peoples and by the Byzantine Empire. The southern Mediterranean coast was part of Visigothic Spain from the fifth century until the Muslim Arab conquest of Hispania (711–718) The city, then known as Mālaqa (مالقة), was encircled by defensive walls. In 1026 it became the capital of the Taifa of Málaga, an independent Muslim kingdom ruled by the Hammudid dynasty[2] in the Caliphate of Córdoba, which was conquered by the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada.

The siege of Mālaqa by the Catholic Monarchs in 1487[3] was one of the longest of the Reconquista. In the 16th century, the area entered a period of slow decline, exacerbated by epidemics of disease, several successive poor food crops, floods, and earthquakes.

Trade, dominated by foreign merchants,[4] was the main source of wealth in Málaga province of the 18th century, with wine and raisins as the principal commodity exports.[5] Public works done on the Málaga city port as well as those on the Antequera and Velez roadways[6] provided the necessary infrastructure for distribution of the renowned Málaga wines.

Málaga, as headquarters of the Capitanía General de Granada (Captaincy General of the Kingdom of Granada) on the coast, played an essential role in the foreign policy of the Bourbon kings of Spain. The regional military and the defence of the Mediterranean were administered in the city. The loss of Gibraltar to the British in the Battle of Málaga of 1704 made the city the key to military defence of the Strait.

During the second half of the 18th century Málaga solved its chronic water supply problems with the completion of one of the largest infrastructure projects carried out in Spain at the time: the building of the Aqueduct of San Telmo.[7] The peasantry and the working classes still made up the vast majority of the population, but the emergence of a business-oriented middle-class lay the foundations for the 19th-century economic boom.

COSTA BLANCA, SPAIN

The long stripe of the Costa Blanca (White Coast) is one of Europe’s most heavily visited areas. If you’re after a secluded midsummer strand, stay away – or head inland to enjoy traditional villages and towns. Then again, if you’re looking for a lively social scene, good beaches and a suntan…
It isn’t all concrete and package deals. Although the original fishing villages have long been engulfed by the sprawl of resorts, a few old-town kernels, such as those of Xàbia (Jávea) and Altea, still survive. Alicante itself has plenty to offer besides legendary nightlife, while Denia is an enticing blend of traditional fishing town, beach resort and gastronomic destination.

MONTGO , ALICANTE

Known as the elephant, the Montgo is an impressive mountain lying between Denia and Javea. Why the elephant? If you look at the incredible shape of the mountain, which seems to loom from the sea to caress the sky, you will see it looks like an elephant with its head and trunk clearly visible.

It’s a photographer’s dream as the rock formations change colour with the light and has inspired thousands of pictures and paintings particularly at sunrise or sunset.

The Montgo, at 735 metres at its peak, also provides a challenge for walkers, hikers and cyclists. There are various paths to take to explore the Montgo, some are easy and one is particularly tough, but all visitors will be rewarded with fabulous sea views. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Balearic island of Ibiza.

The mountain also provides a beautiful natural habitat for more than 650 plant species, including more than 80 which are very rare or in danger of extinction. The most emblematic is a native plant which grows exclusively on the Montgo and mountains in Ibiza and is called Carduncellus dianius.

The mountain also provides a playground for more than 150 wildlife species including the endangered Bonelli’s eagle, other birds of prey, snakes, lizards, badgers, dormice and rabbits.

CALA AMBOLO, JAVEA, ALICANTE

Virgin Nudist Cove with gravel, boulders and crystalline water near the Cove: Cabo de la Nao.
It owes its name to the watchtower built in the 16th Century, whose function was surveillance and maritime defence from pirate attacks the same as the other Xàbia watchtower located in the Portitxol zone, both sites are located on private land. In its Southernmost slope, we find the isla del Descubridor (Discoverer’s Island). The Ambolo scenic viewpoint is near this cove.

SANT JOAN DE LABRITJA, IBIZA

The Municipality of Sant Joan, located on the North, is the least populated in the island, with about 4500 inhabitants. This area’s main features are vast unspoilt woodlands and remarkable rural extensions, where livelihood largely depends on farming. Nature can be found at its finest in Sant Joan’s coastline, cliffs and woodlands, which are often crossed by torrents and stone terraces.

The Municipality is composed of four parishes: Sant Joan, Sant Miquel, Sant Vicent and Sant Llorenç. All of them are small villages where locals live with people from all over the world who have chosen rural Ibiza as their place of residence.

The Municipality shares with Sant Antoni an “Area of Particular Interest”: Es Amunts, an area of high environmental value with a unique fauna and flora. At the same time, Sant Joan offers amazing routes to be walked. They lead to Balanzat’s defensive tower, d’en Marçà’s caves or the archaeological site in Es Culleram’s cave, which houses the most important piece of the islands’ Phoenician past: the goddess Tanit.

The coast line is full of cliffs, only altered by some lovely coves, such as Es Caló des Multons, Cala Xarraca, Es Caló d’en Serra, Cala de Sant Vicent, and Benirràs, which became very popular because of its hippie atmosphere and percussionists,

The Municipality also offers some tourist areas, such as Port de Sant Miquel and Portinatx.

10 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE MOVING TO SPAIN

Moving to Spain is not like moving to paradise. Yes it’s sunny throughout, has beautiful beaches that run for miles and looks really pretty, but it’s also a place which can drive you wild if you don’t know it right.

Tip 1
When dealing with any facet of Spanish bureaucracy, remember The Law of Falta Uno: that however many documents and photocopies you take along there will always be one missing. Always double check that you have every piece of paper that you think you might need – and possibly even a few more that you don't.

Be patient. Be assertive. Take plenty of reading material. Rope in a friendly mentor who speaks the lingo, and check any papers you are given with a fine tooth comb for names, dates, accounts numbers and more before you leave the desk or ventanilla (window). Any undiscovered glitch may set you back years. Oh, and don't forget the rabbit’s foot.

Tip 2
Do not forget to tip the butanero – the man (and it will be a man) who throws those two-ton, orange gas-bottles on his shoulder and climbs four flights of stairs when the lift is broken to deliver what may well be your main source of heating and fuel.

Tip 3
If it is your birthday, don't stand around grinning, waiting for someone to buy you a drink, or bounce jauntily into work expecting to be showered with goodies. Not only do the Spanish drive on the wrong side of the road, they've also got the whole birthday thing completely wrong.

It's your birthday, it's your shout. As if it's not bad enough chalking up another year, you have to treat your colleagues and friends to boot. If it's your child's birthday, make sure he/she takes a big bag of sweets to school to share with classmates.

Tip 4
Do not go to the beach in August. Three quarters of the population of Spain and their families will be there, too. Along with several kitchen sinks. You will wait nine hours to get served at a restaurant, another nine hours for the food to arrive, plus two or three more before you get fed up waiting for the bill and do a 'sinpa' (ie. a runner, from sin pagar – without paying).

Tip 5
Do not pop into the bank/ gestor's office/ estate agent/ post office/ mechanic's between 9.30am and 11am. There will be a queue and one over-worked, stressed-out, don't-you-dare-complain employee will be holding the fort.

Should you wish to see a specific somebody, you can be sure said somebody will be in the nearest bar, tucking into a segundo desayuno (second breakfast). If you can't beat them, join them, and order a nice large café con leche with a torpedo-shaped toasted roll drizzled in oil, rubbed with tomato and topped with either ham, cheese, tuna or tortilla, or any combination thereof.

Tip 6
Remember, children are not only to be heard and seen. They are also to be picked up and cooed over at every possible instant, allowed to stay up as late as their parents during summer holidays, and thought of as nothing but cute as they scream around your table while you try enjoy a quiet drink.

Tip 7
If you need to attract the barperson's attention, a polite raised finger and a timid 'perdone' or 'disculpe' (excuse me) won't get you very far.

Clear your throat, along with however many decades of ingrained politeness, and yell, "¡Oiga!" (Listen, person-that-I-don't-know). Or if you're really really brave yell, "¡Oye!" (Listen, person-that-I-don't-know-but-will-speak-to-as-if-I-did).

That should do it – you'll fit right in and no-one will mutter anything about 'manners' and 'upbringing'. Forthright and direct is ok. Just remember you can make your intonation sound polite – and smile.

Tip 8
Remember, time is relative. In Spain la mañana lasts until about 2pm, la tarde (the afternoon) stretches to nightfall, there is no word for evening, and the early hours have their own special name: la madrugada.

Tip 9
Do not attempt to buy a house, get a new kitchen put in, renew your driving licence, make an insurance claim, see a doctor or give birth in August. Spain is not in (it's gone to the beach; see point four).

Tip 10
Do not refer to Catalan, Valenciano or Gallego as dialects of 'Spanish' or Castilian – unless you want to get right up the nose of a Catalan, Valenciano, Gallego big time. They are all languages in their own right, and are co-official with Castellano in the autonomous communities in which they are spoken (ie. Catalunya, Valencia and the Balearics, and Galicia).

MALAGA NIGHLIFE

The Costa del Sol has good all year round nightlife, but it is in Summer months when it really comes to life, with clubbing, beach parties and a healthy dose of fun in the Sun! Warm summer nights make the ideal ambiance to enjoy out-door parties and observe all those sexy tanned bodies in light summer clothing!

During Spanish Festivals, such as San Juan, huge beach parties and outdoor disco's are traditional on the Costa del Sol. Party Zones, like Puerto Banus, Marbella and Benalmadena, bring you the best in Clubbing, Party bars and bar crawling! Beach by day, party by Night, is the true Summer lifestyle here on the Costa del Sol in Spain!

MALAGA NIGHTLIFE

As the Regional Capital City and the gateway to the Costa del Sol, Malaga has some very varied night life and is a vibrant city by night. Malaga, is pretty international, but it has retained a very traditional feel, as cities go, it's quite a safe place and typically has good shopping, bars, restaurants and nightclubs!

Malaga is the place to experience the very best in Spanish clubbing and nightlife, with some of the best internationally recognised Spanish DJ's. The City has a variety of nightclubs and night life to suit a variety of tastes. As will most citys, Malaga's nightlife has a very cosmopolitan feel about it and it's certainly possible to stay out 24 hours in this city! As well as nightlife in the form of clubs, there are many venues where you can see bands and live music in Malaga.

Malaga's beaches are quite nice too and very clean for city beaches, although, the Aircraft flying into Malaga Airport, tend to become annoying when relaxing on the beach, great for plane spotters though! Getting a good hotel in Malaga is considerably more expensive, but there are a few reasonable hostels around, driving here is a nightmare, but there is very good public transport, Buses, Taxis and trains!

BAELO CLAUDIA

Just north of Bolonia sits one of Spain’s most important Roman archaeological excavations, Baelo Claudia. The ruins of Baelo Claudia are fascinating and provide one of the best examples of Roman urban architecture to be found anywhere on the Iberian Peninsula.

Renowned for its Garum industry, the highly prized salted fish paste that was used as a condiment throughout the Roman Empire. A visit to the ruins is highly recommended.

Miles and miles of fine white sand, crystal clear waters and views across to Morocco.

Bolonia is a place to switch off that mobile phone, unfold the parasol and soak up some of that warm Andalucian sun.

BOLONIA BEACH, ANDALUCIA

Bolonia beach, Playa de Bolonia, also sometimes known as Ensenada de Bolonia sits next to a small fishing village, approximately 20km north of Tarifa. Far quieter than its more trendy neighbour, Bolonia is beginning to make a name for itself having been voted into Europe's top 25 beaches by Tripadvisor and regularly featuring on any best beaches in Spain shortlist.

Despite the increasing international recognition, it is still considered by many as one of Andalucia's best kept secrets and is only really popular with Spanish tourists.

When asking Spanish families where their favorite beaches are; Bolonia is one name that always seems to crop up. We try and go at least once a year.

Some of the hip surfers and kite-surfers are making their way down to the beach when the easterly wind - the Levante - picks up, but generally speaking, Bolonia beach still has a untouched/family-oriented feel to it.

Geography

Geography is something that has worked in Bolonia’s favour, you need to drive 7km along the CA-8202 to get there. Sitting in a cul-de-sac, there is no drive thru traffic. If on that road, you only have one destination. The beach.

The area sits within the Estrecho Natural Park, El Parque Natural del Estrecho. Planning and construction laws have been rigorously introduced and enforced. None of the twenty or so buildings that make up the village (El Lentiscal) are over two storeys high. Bar a few chiringuitos, surfing schools and hostels, Bolonia remains the perfect place for travellers looking for peace and tranquillity.

The beach was best known for its huge sand dune system, one of the largest in Europe. One particular dune has been declared an Andalusian natural monument and is over 30m in height and 200m in width. The dunes and the vegetation provide protection against the wind.

CHRISTMAS MARKET IN SUNNY ANDALUCIA

Although we don’t have snow  but lots of sun, Christmas is nevertheless a time of enjoyment and celebration here in the Costa del Sol, Andalusia. A very common Christmas feature, Christmas Markets, are up and running helping the Christmas spirit move around.

These markets happen in different locations throughout the Costa del Sol, below we have name you a few:

Malaga: at Paseo del Parque one can stroll through beautiful gardens and Christmas stalls selling artisan, books and other Christmas items.

Marbella: at Puerto Deportivo, every Sunday in December from 12:00pm to 6:00pm visit the Christmas Marke for a very special chance to buy local handmade gifts for friends and family.

Torremolinos: At the Town hall one can visit the impressive exhibition of the Bethlehem Nativity Scene or the Christmas tree in the Plaza Costa del Sol.

La Cala de Mijas: at the Main Boulevard of La Cala, from the 30th of November till the 15th of December an International Christmas Fair is held. Beautiful wooden houses have been put up where  you can buy crafts, food, hot wines and Christmas sweets. Apart from the market there will also be flamenco and modern dancing performances, some carol singing, activities for children, a parade and even Santa and the Three Wise Men will be there!

Fuengirola: at Plaza de la Constitucion, from December 3 to 16

Benalmádena: at Plaza de la Mezquita. On 7th of December from 11am to 8 pm. Stalls of different countries with typical Christmas products, entertainment and surprises.

Christmas in Andalusia is full of traditions, great food and “more the merrier” on the wine! Cities dressed up as glittering stars, it’s hard to miss fact that it’s party season. Loud and bright ambiance gives the whole essence of Christmas a purpose and sense of authenticity. Locals celebrate Christmas by bringing families, all big Spanish families, together to eat, drink and laugh laugh laugh.

Because of Spain’s Catholicism it is very typical see “Bethehem’s” (Nativity sets) set up in various venues throughout Spanish cities. These Nativity set show the route of the Three Kings to baby Jesus, in a grande exposé of figurines, some are even life like with real working fountains and all!
