GERMANS IN MARBELLA

It’s the awakening of the Costa del Sol’s oldest friend.  In 2015 there was an increase of 15.2% of Germans staying in hotels and 10.8% in arrivals at Malaga airport. The president of Tourism of the Costa del Sol, Elias Bendodo, wants to consolidate this increase and bring even more. In fact he has already contemplated an overall increase of 10% for the first quarter of 2016, bringing the headcount to 182,000 travelers. Bendodo’s strategy relies on two pillars of success: improving air connectivity between Germany and the Costa del Sol and advertising his region as a destination that can be enjoyed 365 days a year. His plan is to discuss the restructuring of Ryanair’s, Germania’s and Air Berlin’s operations in the Costa del Sol and show that his region is not only about beaches but also about beautiful golfs. This increase in German tourists will ultimately lead to more people staying in hotels and holiday rental properties therefore increasing the attractiveness of properties in Marbella, Nueva Andalucia and Puerto Banus.

RINCON DE LA VICTORIA, MALAGA

Rincon de la Victoria is sometimes described by local residents as a "dormitory town". Situated just 12km east of Malaga, it makes a convenient base for those who work in the city but prefer sea breezes and beaches, and the relative tranquillity of an overgrown fishing village. It is also a popular place for the Spanish to "veranear" (spend the summer months) and many families have their second home here. The municipality of Rincon includes the neighbouring fishing village of La Cala and the pretty inland village of Benagalbon.

Rapid expansion in the last five years or so, however, with apartment blocks springing up literally overnight, has meant that services are overstretched in July and August. The winter population of 26, 600 inhabitants almost triples during this period. Those of us who live here breathe a sigh of relief when the vacationers go back to the city and leave us the best month of the year, September, all to ourselves.
The rest of the year, the town retains a laid-back atmosphere, yet offers the tourist or resident an ever-wider choice of places to dine-out, tapear (drink and tapa-bar crawl) and dance the night away.  Sadly the "cine de verano" (open-air summer cinema) is no longer a part of the evening entertainment but enthusiasts of this wonderful institution can go to Cine Las Palmeras in the neighbouring village of La Cala. For the latest in air-conditioned, high-tech, super-sound, ergonomic-seated cinemas, the Rincón Centro Comercial (opened 2002) offers twenty screens.

Rincon de la Victoria's greatest asset is its lively urban sea front and beach. From the westernmost cliff top, marked by a Moorish watch-tower, the view sweeps down the length of the sandy beach, past the clutter of blue and white fishing boats, chiringuitos (fish restaurants on the beach), palm trees, the occasional cluster of thatched sunshades, and the endless to-ing and fro-ing of promenaders, cyclists and joggers.
The sea front itself, recently rebuilt and improved, stretches from one end of the town to the other. Two popular walks with Rinconites are along the sea front to La Cala, and to the shrine of the town's patron, the Virgin del Carmen, embedded in the rock at the westernmost tip of the beach.
The route to La Cala cuts through the cliff-side, going through three rock-hewn tunnels. Once dark, dank, malodorous and full of holes and puddles, the tunnels have recently been done-up and lit-up to allow walkers and cyclists easy access. After the first tunnel, you can climb up the steps and follow the outcrop round for the scenic route, or carry on straight through until you come out at La Cala.
Apart from sea, sun, sand and succulent seafood, Rincón does have one or two sights worth seeing. The Casa Fuerte (fort) set in one of the town's few green spaces doubles as an art gallery and occasional concert chamber. Dating back to the reign of Carlos III, the fortress was built in 1733 as part of the coastal defence against English pirate attacks.
Most visitors to the town take a trip to the famous Treasure Cave, "la Cueva del Tesoro", located just outside the town in the residential area of El Cantal.
Sadly, what should be Rincon de la Victoria's greatest touristic and historic focal point, the ruins of the Moorish medina town of Bezmiliana, has been jeopardised by uncontrolled construction work and nothing short of local government-approved vandalism. Citizens' protest groups are currently fighting to halt building work on El Cerro de Castillón, the town's largest remaining green area and site of the ancient town's major fortress.
Like every other village and town in Andalucia, Rincón has its fair share of fiestas and festivals. The feria takes place in July and last for five days, coming to an end on the 16th, the day of the Virgen del Carmen. A folkloric spectacle of flower-decked thrones and boats, sailors and fishermen, cheering and veneration, rocket flares and fireworks, this is a festival not to be missed.
For the golfers among us, there is one fabulous Golf Course in Rincón de la Victoria called Añoreta Golf Course complete with practice facilities such as a driving range, putting green all topped off with panoramic sea views at the 7th hole.

ALHAURIN EL GRANDE, MALAGA

ALHAURIN EL GRANDE

In the forested areas south-east of the village of Alhaurín el Grande there are traces of Neolithic occupation: silent witnesses to the long history of human habitation of the area. A history longer than history itself.
By the time that the Romans arrived, the tiny Iberian settlement in the Sierra de Mijas was already well established, but if it had a name the Romans chose not to record it. Instead they gave it one of their own. The village became Lauro Nova. It was a spot apparently blessed by the gods: fertile, temperate, and surrounded by hills riddled with valuable mineral deposits. Roman villas popped up around the kernel of the village like dozens of Jack-in-the-Boxes springing open in rapid sequence. The hills are still dotted with their remains.
It was a golden age which became a little tarnished during the time of the Visigoths. The town was in no danger of disappearing, but its development was exceedingly slow. It was not until the Moors took it on and built it a fortress on a hilltop called Torres de Fahala that it began to move again. The Moors also gave it a new name: Alhaurín (Garden of Allah). Like the Romans before them, they linked the township to a second to which they gave the same name, distinguishing them as Alhaurín el Grande and Alhaurín de la Torre. To the Romans they had been Lauro Nova and Lauro Vetus.
The fort was destroyed in the destructive zeal of the Christian reconquest, but at least the village survived. Others close by, such as Benamaquis and Fahala were not so fortunate.
Alhaurín el Grande has survived a great deal. Waves of invaders, epidemics of plague, even an earthquake in 1680. During the Peninsula War of 1808-14 it was occupied for four years by French troops and suffered considerable bombardment.

WINDS IN SPAIN

Everyone knows about the rain in Spain but the winds deserve a mention. We’ve been here in March when it barely relented for five days in a row and, on the odd occasion, we thought we’d end up somewhere over the rainbow.

The fabulous meteorologist Steph Ball (on Twitter), who’s based in Gibraltar, drew our attention to the terral wind blowing. We’d never heard of it, so did a bit of research. It’s one of several ‘types’ of wind it seems (most known by different names, depending on where you live in Spain):

Terral: A hot wind that comes out of the interior from north to south picking up heat as it travels overland. Terral is its name around Málaga but around the world it can be known as the Chinook winds (east of the Rocky Mountains, US), the Helm Wind (Pennines, UK) and the Zonda (Andes, Argentina).

Levante: An easterly wind that blows in the western Mediterranean and southern France. When it blows through the Strait of Gibraltar it’s called the Viento de Levante or the Levanter and helps form dramatic clouds. It’s also known as the Solano.

Poniente: A warm, dry westerly wind that blows across the Atlantic onto the west Mediterranean coast and through the Strait of Gibraltar. Tarifa is well known for its winds making it a popular windsurfing destination. The Levante is more dominant in the summer and the Poniente in the winter.

Cierzo: A strong, dry (often cold) wind that blows from the North or Northwest through the regions of La Rioja, Aragon and Navarra in the Ebro valley. Happens when there’s an area of low-pressure in the Mediterranean and an anticyclone in the Bay of Biscay.

Leveche: A dry, warm wind often to the south-east coast between Almeria and Valencia. It can also be a hot, southerly wind in advance of a low pressure area moving from the Sahara Desert. It’s called a Sirocco in other parts of the Mediterranean area.

SANTA BARBARA CASTLE, ALICANTE, SPAIN

You can't fail to notice this impressive castle situated on an outcrop over looking Alicante City. It's one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe and covers the complete summit of the Benacantil Mountain. Originally built by the Moors in the 10th century, the castle received its name from the conquest of King Alfonse the Wise that took place on 4th December 1248: Saint Barbara's day. Over the following centuries it was developed and extended leaving it with three main areas all dating from different eras.

Castle over the townSanta Barbara Castle has everything you would expect, cannons, a palace, dungeons, a moat, the ruins of a small church and of course that famous lookout tower. From all around the walls you get the most fantastic views: a definite photo opportunity. And when you're tired of walking up and down steep paths, peering over cliff edges and pondering the places from where boiling oil was thrown, there are two café areas where you can take a break in the shade of pine trees.

The castle is free to visit and there are two entrance points. If you're feeling energetic you can walk along the road that winds around the back of the mountain, or if you're short of time you can drive. The easier way, incurring a small charge (but free if you are disabled or an EU senior citizen) is via an elevator going up through a tunnel carved out of the rock. You find the entrance opposite the Postiguet beach area.

AlicanteSanta Barbara Castle is an excellent place to visit at anytime of the year. In the height of summer it’s a perfect place to catch the sea breeze, whilst in the cooler months the walk up to the castle through the parks and pine wood allows you time to reflect on the difficulties of capturing it.

insiders tip: Take a look at the rocky outcrop just below the lookout point: depending on the angle that you view it, you will be able to see the outline of a Moor's face!

History of Alicante

Castle Evenings
Castle at NightIn the summer months of July and August the Town Hall hosts a programme of special 'castle evenings'. These usually consist of concerts held on Friday and Saturday nights in the courtyard of Santa Barbara Castle. They're free (limited only by the maximum capacity of the venue) and start at 22.00hrs. Being out under the stars on a balmy evening, listening to music with the backdrop of a medieval castle is a truly enchanting experience.

El Campello is about 14 kilometres from Alicante. Situated in the heart of the Costa Blanca, it has 23 kilometres of coastline with beautiful beaches offering a landscape of contrasts. WINES OF MALAGA

WINES OF MALAGA

Málaga province has long been famous for its sweet fortified wines, made from the Moscatel and Pedro Ximenez grape varieties. From the Phoenicians in the eighth century BC, the Greeks and Romans to the Moors and later the British, all enthusiastic drinkers of Málaga wines.
Malaga has three DOs (Denominaciones de Origen):
DO Malaga (mostly sweet white wines)
DO Sierra de Malaga (white, rose and red wines)
DO Pasas de Malaga (raisins).
Traditional sweet dessert wines in the DO Málaga are made from the Pedro Ximénez and Moscatel white grape varieties. These are found in three areas: La Axarquia, Montes de Malaga, and Zona Norte (the hills north of Antequera).

SWEET WINES

The DOs of Malaga and Sierra de Malaga cover similar geographical regions, but are distinguished by the different types of wines produced, as described above. This means that sweet Malaga wines are made in the areas of La Axarquia, Montes de Malaga and Zona Norte, but so are other types of wine under the DO Sierra de Malaga (commonly known as the Serrania de Ronda.)
In Manilva grapes are dried in the sun to make pasas (raisins), under the DO Pasas de Malaga; local sweet wine is produced called mosto.

RONDA WINES

One notable area of the DO Sierra de Malaga is the Serrania de Ronda. A number of modern bodegas in the hills around the town of Ronda produce young red wines using Romé, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Petit Verdot and Tempranillo grapes. Their white wine varieties include Chardonnay, Macabeo, Colombard and Sauvignon Blanc.

FERIA DE MALAGA, MALAGA FAIR

The annual Malaga city fair in August is an exuberant week-long street party with plenty of flamenco and 'fino'(sherry). The fair commemorates the re-conquest of the city by Isabella and Ferdinand in 1487 and traditionally runs from Saturday to Saturday on the third week in August.

This castanet-clicking fiesta starts off with a bang, literally, with an impressive firework display in the park which can be seen for miles around. The best view is from the Port if you happen to be on a cruise ship or can persuade a sailor friend to drop anchor there for a few hours.

The following day the people take to the streets, the women in flouncy flamenco dresses, to dance, drink and, generally, make merry. The traditional dance of Andalucia is called 'Sevillanas' comprising four distinct dances with plenty of finger-clicking, foot-stomping and, above all, feeling. This is where 'dancing in the street' can be appreciated spontaneously 'en vida' which is really the only way Spanish dancing should be performed.
This city fair is concentrated around Malaga's equivalent to London's Bond Street - Marques de Larios which is decorated with paper lanterns and flags. Millions of people visit the fair, although very few tourists seem to even know about this intrinsically Andalusian traditional fiesta which, in Malaga, is two distinct events, in the centre during the day up to 19.00hrs and at the fairground from around 9 pm until dawn.
The latter is an immense precinct to the west of the A7 near the Palacio de Congresos building where various associations install their 'casetas' - large booths for entertainment and refreshment, where old and young alike meet up in laughing gossiping circles, surrounded by swirling dancers and waiters rushing around tripping over babies and young children and making sure that everyone is continually topped up with fino and 'tapas'.
The casetas are also where many business deals are struck between local Malagueños who have closed their conventional office for the week. Outside, the fair is a gaudy, raucous fairyland of dazzling lights, deafening music, soaring ferris wheels and careering dodgem cars, an assault on all the senses and incomparable to any 'conventional' fair elsewhere.

The Andalusian feria is celebrated in the majority of towns and even villages at some time between Spring and Autumn and for the locals means far more than a holiday from work. They are the very reason and justification for the year, occasions to be immersed in with passion and commitment. Some, like Malaga, Cordoba and, particularly Seville are rich and glittering affairs attracting millions of visitors while others, such as the feria of Casares is a far smaller version; an exuberant street party where everyone knows everyone and relatives who have moved away return to join their families in the all familiar annual celebration.

There is patent rivalry between the two main Andalusian cities, Seville and Malaga – especially when it comes to festivities. In April, Seville boasts the illumination of something like 500,000 lights for the inauguration of the town’s massive annual fair. In true competitive spirit, Malaga strives to go one better and in 2004 it was reported that they nearly hit the half million mark – and so the one-upmanship goes on. This Festival of light by night is just one aspect of the ‘Feria de Málaga’. The inaugural night of the Fair is launched with the traditional ‘Pregón de la Feria’ (opening address) read out from the Town Hall balcony, followed, on the strike of midnight, by an awe-inspiring fireworks display. This ‘Big Bang’ is a magnificent show of Malaga’s muscle in the party prowess department and is best appreciated from Malaga Port, where thousands gather vying for a privileged view of this magical scene.

The Feria celebrations date back to 1487, when Los Reyes Católicos, Isabella and Ferdinand re-conquered the city. Over time, it has evolved into a huge event and it has two distinct facets – day and night. ‘La Feria de día’ warms up around midday and oficially finishes at 7 pm when the street cleaners make there way through the (by now) younger feria goers. Hundreds of people take to the streets of the city’s historic centre, which are beautifully decorated and food, drink and trinket stalls are set up. Shops and businesses close and the classy pedestrian shopping street, Calle Marques de Larios, and surrounding area are transformed for the duration of the celebrations. Soak in the wall-to-wall swishing flamenco dresses, gleaming Andalusian horses, music and spontaneous dancing and you understand something of the Andalusian love of life and ability to party.
By night the place to be is the big purpose built Fair Ground, set just on the edge of the city, west of the A. There are shuttle buses laid on from the centre of the city. From around 9.00 p.m. till dawn this massive purpose built fiesta area vibrates with life. Here, 21 st century technology mingles with old Andalusian traditions. From fairground rides, to live music and dancing and endless food, drink and entertainment, the choice is vast. If you do nothing other than people-watch, y near the Palacio de Congresos building. You will enjoy a sense of theatre when you see the stunning elegance and beauty of some of the women and men milling around or dancing traditional Sevillanas, till dawn. However the number of people wearing traditional dress is slowly diminishing over the years, cost and heat cited as the reason.
A third choice is the sometimes shocking, but always spectacular selection of bullfights in the city’s bullring at La Malagueta.
The traditional dates of the Malaga feria are the Saturday to Saturday of the third week of August.

SAN PEDRO DE ALCANTARA, MALAGA

SAN PEDRO DE ALCANTARA

San Pedro de Alcántara is in an ideal situation, just 10 kilometres west from all the glitz and glamour of Marbella, yet just a few minutes drive away from the natural beauty of the Sierra de Ronda mountain range and 20 km from the town of Estepona. An ancient farming community, once famous for sugar cane, today San Pedro is a refreshingly unspoilt pueblo with an appeal all of its own.

Be sure to head for the central plaza here with its gracious parish church and surrounding narrow streets which are packed with intriguing small shops, sidewalk cafes and bars. Thursday is street market day with all the associated hustle and bustle; a veritable bargain shopper's paradise. At the lower end of Avenida Maeques del Duero sitting on top of the main coast road (in a 3km underpass) is the Boulevard park.

A pleasant walk is from the centre of town to the beachfront along the Avenida del Marques del Duero which is a particularly attractive wide avenue flanked by palm trees. And the modern wide promenade is ideal for continuing your stroll (or skateboarding!) with several excellent chiringuitos (beachside restaurants) specialising in fish dishes. Visit Bora Bora if only for a drink at the bar. It is one of the best beach clubs on the coast, with a superb restaurant and all the usual beach facilities, a tropical paradise.
San Pedro also has the last summer fair ( feria ) in Andalucia being in the second week in October.
