BAHIA DE MARBELLA


Bahía de Marbella is a luxury urbanisation just east of Marbella, near the Los Monteros area. It is on the beach and near the Hospital Costa del Sol, a number of five-star hotels and several golf courses including Rio Real Golf, Santa Clara and Marbella Golf Club, which are only minutes away.

In this neighbourhood there are a number of fine housing developments as well as a resort. The English International College (EIC) is less than 10 minutes by car and Málaga's international airport is only 50 kilometres away. The Cabo Pino port and marina are also very near.

VILLAGES AND SMALL TOWNS, MALAGA




Like neighbouring Cadiz province, Malaga is sprinkled liberally with pretty pueblos blancos, or white towns and villages, the most well-known of all these being Ronda. Malaga is inundated with visitors to its famous Costa del Sol and the pueblos blancos nearest this coastal strip are the most popular, but it´s relatively easy to find more remote villages that retain an away-from-it-all charm, such as those of the Axarquía region northeast of Malaga city.

COSTA DEL SOL

West of Malaga city is the most visited stretch of the Andalucian coastline, the Costa del Sol. Purpose-built resorts of high-rise apartments line many of the beaches, but there is also the jetsetters' haunt of upmarket Marbella to explore, with an old quarter riddled with tiny streets that link pretty squares. Adjacent to Marbella is the glamorous marina of Puerto Banús, while further east are the hedonistic pleasures of Torremolinos, which has some great bars and clubs. Leaving these heady delights behind, head west to Estepona, which has managed to maintain a relatively low-key atmosphere, reflecting its former life as a fishing village.
In the immediate hilly hinterland of the western Costa del Sol are mountain villages popular with foreign visitors to the Costa del Sol, such as the settlements north of Marbella at the foot of the towering Sierra Bermeja. Istán nestles beneath the peaks of the Sierra Blanca, while Ojén is further east, on the A355, and beyond Ojén in a mountain valley is Monda and then Guaro. The attractive village of Benahavís north of San Pedro de Alcántara is well-known for its many excellent restaurants.
West of Estepona is the surprisingly unspoilt village of Manilva - given its proximity to the Costa - and, further inland along a beautifully scenic road, Casares. This village is in a spectacular position with its house clinging precariously to the sides of a rocky pinnacle, crowned by a Moorish fortress.
North of the coastal resorts of Fuengirola and Torremolinos there is the popular, pretty village of Mijas, with great views down to the coast, the historic village of Alhaurín el Grande that has vestiges of settlement traced back to Neolithic times, its much newer neighbour, Alhaurín de la Torre, and Coín.
On the eastern Costa del Sol close to Malaga city is Rincón de la Victoria, with a marine cave - the Cueva del Tesoro - believed to have hidden treasure (tesoro). Further east is the resort of Torre del Mar, which has an attractively revamped main paseo and a lively seafront.
Nerja is the most attractive town along this stretch of coastline, sheltering at the foot of the Sierra de Almijara. Don´t miss its magnificent tree-lined promenade, the Balcón de Europa, jutting out into the sea and giving stunning views along the rocky shore. Nerja is also famous for its cave, the Cueva de Nerja, 4km from town.

VILLAGES OF THE GUADALHORCE VALLEY

Easily accessible from Malaga are a series of village nestling in the Guadalhorce valley. The closest to Malaga on the A357 is Cártama, once a strategic stronghold for the Romans and the Moors who constructed a castle, today better known for its enormously popular Crocodiles Park. Just beyond is the small but historically interesting Pizarra. Further north is Álora, the biggest place along this route, with steep, cobbled streets leading up to a ruined Moorish citadel, now the town´s cemetery. It is tucked into the foot of a rocky cliff topped by a castle, which was first constructed by the Phoenicians.
Northwest of Álora is the tiny spa resort of Carratraca, whose sulphuric hot springs have been popular since the 19th century, when its waters assuaged the aches and pains of famous travellers - and hypochondriacs - such as the poet Lord Byron. Close to the Guadalhorce reservoirs, with a lakeside campsite, is Ardales. North of Ardales is Teba, whose streets are lined with many grand mansions. The village enjoys some of the best panoramic views in the area over a gently rolling plain clad in olive groves and cereal plantations.
Don´t miss the spectacular Moorish fortress of Bobastro, near the reservoirs, a site where the Muslims, rebelling against the Caliph of Cordoba, converted to Christianity and carved a mosque-like church in solid rock. East of here is the Valle de Abdalajis in an impressive mountainside location and near some excellent hang-gliding territory. At the foot of the magnificent limestone rock formations of the Torcal de Antequera Natural Area is the hill town of Villanueva de la Concepción.

PUEBLOS BLANCOS OF THE SERRANÍA DE RONDA

The mountain range of the Serranía de Ronda is dotted with many hilltop whitewashed villages topped by Moorish castles. Since the 19th century when it attracted a whole host of illustrious visitors, the most popular of these has undoubtedly been Ronda. In a much-photographed stunning position on the top of the sheer-sided Tajo gorge, Ronda is remarkably appealing with a beautifully preserved old town and many great bars and restaurants.

SAN ROQUE, CADIZ



San Roque is a small town and municipality in the south of Spain. It is part of the province of Cádiz, which in turn is part of the autonomous community of Andalusia. San Roque is situated a short way inland of the north side of the Bay of Gibraltar, just to the north of the Gibraltar peninsula. The municipality has a total surface of 145 km² with a population of approximately 25,500 people, as of 2005. Its name is Spanish for Saint Roch, a Christian saint who was revered in a shrine dating back to 1508 that predates the foundation of the town.

BENAHAVIS, MARBELLA




Benahavis is a Spanish mountain village between Marbella, Estepona, and Ronda, 7 km from the coast. Renowned for its restaurants, it is often called the dining room of the Costa del Sol.

It holds 9 of the 60 golf courses in the Costa del Sol; that number is expected to increase to 15 in the next decade.

On the southern face of La Serrania de Ronda mountain range, Benahavis is one of the most mountainous villages on the western Costa del Sol, near the resort beaches as well as the spectacular mountains of the Serrania de Ronda. Its terrain is traversed by the Guadalmina, Guadaiza and Guadalmansa Rivers. Places of great natural and historic interest are to be found within its boundaries, such as El Cerro del Duque, Daidin and the Montemayor Castle.

The town itself is surrounded by natural parkland and still has a modicum of a secluded, cozy feel. La Zagaleta, an exclusive gated residential estate and country club overlooking the village, is within its municipal boundaries. It contributes to Benahavis' status as the richest municipality per capita in Andalucía.

In recent years there has been extended development of the village and the surrounding area with many hundreds of dwellings being built, not only reducing the proportion of local inhabitants but also despoiling some of the beautiful landscapes in the mountains and approaches to the village[citation needed].

During the late 1990s, the Junta de Andalucia constructed a dam on the site of an old marble quarry, and now for much of the year the once ever-flowing Río Guadalmina is merely a dried-up riverbed.

FRENCH ELECTIONS



Emmanuel Macron was elected France’s youngest head of state since Napoleon last night after beating his far-Right rival Marine Le Pen in an 
emphatic result that will have far-reaching consequences for Brexit and Europe.

Projections gave 39-year-old Mr Macron almost two thirds of the vote, showing a clear path to the Élysée Palace for the pro-EU centrist who was a political unknown until three years ago and has never held elected office.

Addressing the nation, a sober Mr Macron immediately reached across the divide to Le Pen voters, saying he heard the "anger, anxiety and doubts" that many had expressed.

SABINILLAS,MALAGA






SABINILLAS OVERVIEW

The present-day fishing village is a new settlement which developed over the last century or so. Like most towns on the Costa del Sol, it has seen rapid growth over the last few decades.
Since the construction of Punta Almina estate in the 1980s, Sabinillas has become a popular place for expats working locally and in Gibraltar. The most recent developments are the improvements to Avenida Manilva, the construction of the seafront promenade and the underpass for the traffic on the coast road A7.

Pavement cafes and bars have flourished along with the opening of new banks and real estate offices. The village has a working atmosphere for those who want a touch of what is probably the only real Spain left on the western Costa del Sol.

One thing has not changed and that is the reputation of the seafood bars and restaurants on the seafront and one of the quieter most expansive beaches in the area.

SUNDAY MARKET

What started out in 1990 as small Sunday morning car boot sale in Sabinillas, supported by a few expats, is now one of the biggest rastros on the coast and a visit from bullfighter Javier Conde helped to cement its reputation. Since its humble beginnings, the market has changed locations three times to accommodate a growing clientele, and is now located at the Feria Ground on the 'Caretera las Baños' road that cuts inland from the A7 on the roundabout just west of the River Manilva.

There is also a local produce market on a Friday morning in the 'Zona de la Noria' at the west end of the seafront promenade.

AUGUST FULL MOON PARTY (LUNA LLENA DE MANILVA)

Since 2011 each summer, Sabinillas has held a full moon festival on its beaches in August, with live bands, dancing, body painting, craft stalls and friends getting together on the beach for moonlight picnics. The full moon festival was inspired by the famous lantern and full moon festival in Koh Pha Ngan in Thailand, although more family orientated.

VILLAGE OF BENAHAVIS, MALAGA



To many Andalucíans, native and expatriate alike, Benahavis is synonymous with food. It has the highest concentration of high class restaurants in the region and draws visitors by the thousand who come simply to savour the cuisine.


It also has an extremely high percentage of resident expatriates who have found its situation and ambience irresistible.
In spite of this, it has remained remarkably unspoiled, with winding narrow streets ill-suited to the motor car, and a picturesqueness which almost makes it seem like a specially-created film set.
It stands 500 metres above sea level, 7 kilometres inland from the Guadalmina Golf Course, and is reached by driving through the rio Guadalmina gorge up into the hills.
Its Moorish heritage is emphasised by the existence nearby of the ruined 11th Century castle of Montemayor.
As its name implies, this Arab stronghold squats on top of the highest mountain in the locality, and anyone wishing to make the climb to visit the ruins and experience the truly sensational views of the coastline should be prepared for a strenuous but rewarding effort.

he strife and tension of the Moorish age, in which Montemayor played a prominent part, is long gone.

Today, Benahavis is seldom quiet during the tourist season, but the greatest problems are finding a place to park, and choosing a restaurant.
Even the old stone Arab walls around the town hall have been converted into one.
A notable feature of the village is La Aldea. Almost a village within a village, La Aldea was the brainchild of the British sculptor, David Marshall, whose gallery is one of its main features however there are other art galleries in Benahavis.
Though largely a recent creation, determined efforts have been made to make this enclave even more Andalucían than Benahavis itself, with marble fountains, antiques and old-fashioned doors and grilles.

Inevitably, Benahavis is growing quickly. On its outskirts new urbanisations are springing up like mould forming rapidly on an over-ripe peach.

But this is not being allowed to attack the old village, and the visitor who remains steadfastly at its centre, as most do, might almost be unaware of their existence.
If possible, a parking space should be found at the entrance to the village and the tour of its streets undertaken on foot.
All too often this is easier said than done, and the best alternative is to drive carefully to the Restaurante Los Faroles on calle Málaga, beside which an enterprising villager has turned a rare spot of unused land into a welcome and cheap car park.
It should not be assumed that restaurants are the only eating places in Benahavis. For those not ready for a heavy lunch there are numerous bars serving excellent tapas and even a small pizzeria.

But its restaurants are its glory, and it celebrates the fact by describing itself on the road signs that guide you there as the gastronomic corner of Andalucía. If you plan to go there, breakfast lightly

The Crocodile Park at Torremolinos is a 20 minute drive away and the port at Benalmadena is also worth a visit.

The beach at Riviera del Sol is usually less crowded and has its own chiringuito (beach restaurant) where they serve food and drinks all day.

Golf
There are numerous golf courses within 20 minutes drive, including the Miraflores Golf Club, in the urbanisation of Miraflores, which is situated next to Riviera del Sol. Calahonda and Cabopino courses are also close by, as is the Mijas Golf Complex.

Climate
Riviera del Sol enjoys a sub-tropical Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and warm winters. Cooling breezes from the sea make the summer heat manageable, temperatures are an average of 32 ºC in summer.

SERRANIA DE RONDA, MALAGA



The Serranía de Ronda is studded with charming pueblos blancos (white villages) that can be visited by car in a number of delightful day trips. The dramatically positioned town of Ronda, on the Tajo gorge, has become one of the most popular destinations in Andalucia. It enjoys magnificent views over the untamed mountains of the Serranía de Ronda (Ronda Mountain Range) and the Sierra de las Nieves (Snow Mountain Range) Natural Park.


Moving away from Ronda there are more villages worth visiting. These might not actually be included as Sierranía de Ronda towns as they are on the east and south fringes of the mountain range, and they include such picturesque destinations as Tolox, Guaro and Istán.
There are also two more areas worth visiting further away nearer the coast which are also not strictly part of the Serranía de Ronda but are often included in guide books. South of Gaucín and less inland from Casares and Manilva are two protected areas: the Sierra Crestellina Natural Area, near the village of Casares, and the Reales de la Sierra Bermeja Natural Area. Although little visited, they offer some superb walks through dense woodland.

RONDA , MALAGA



RONDA

Despite being Andalucía's fastest-growing town - it overtook Córdoba in the big three Andaluz tourist attractions, behind Sevilla and Granada, in the early 21st century - Ronda retains much of its historic charm, particularly its old town. It is famous worldwide for its dramatic escarpments and views, and for the deep El Tajo gorge that carries the rio Guadalevín through its centre. Visitors make a beeline for the 18th century Puente Nuevo 'new' bridge, which straddles the 100m chasm below, for its unparalleled views out over the Serranía de Ronda mountains.


Ronda is also famous as the birthplace of modern bullfighting, today glimpsed once a year at the spectacular Feria Goyesca. Held at the beginning of September, here fighters and some of the audience dress in the manner of Goya's sketches of life in the region. Legendary Rondeño bullfighter Pedro Romero broke away from the prevailing Jerez 'school' of horseback bullfighting in the 18th century to found a style of bullfighting in which matadores stood their ground against the bull on foot. In 2006 royalty and movie stars were helicoptered in for the Goyesca's 50th anniversary celebrations in its small bullring, while thousands jammed the streets and parks outside. Otherwise the bullring, Plaza de Toros, is now a museum, and visitors can stroll out into the arena.
Ronda also holds a lovely 'romería' pilgrimage each year. This is in honour of the Virgen de la Cabeza and is organised by the local Catholic brotherhood of the same name. For those wishing to see the lighter side of life in Ronda this is a wonderful way to participate in a local tradition that dates back to the beginning of the 20th century.

Across the bridge, where an elegant cloistered 16th century convent is now an art museum, old Ronda, La Ciudad, sidewinds off into cobbled streets hemmed by handsome town mansions, some still occupied by Ronda's titled families. The Casa de Don Bosco is one such, its interior patio long ago roofed in glass against Ronda's harsh winters. Its small, almost folly-like gardens lose out, however, to the true star, a few minutes' walk to the furthest end of the Ciudad, the Palacio Mondragón. Clumsily modernised in parts during the 1960s, this still has working vestiges of the exquisite miniature water gardens dating from its time as a Moorish palace during Ronda's brief reign as a minor Caliphate under Córdoba in the 12th century.
The cobbled alley to the Mondragón leads naturally on to Ronda's loveliest public space, the leafy Plaza Duquesa de Parcent, which boasts a convent, two churches, including the toytown belltower of the iglesia Santa Maria de Mayor, and the handsome arched ayuntamiento (council) building. Nearby calle Armiñan leads down to the spacious plaza of the traditional workers' barrio, San Francisco, with excellent bars and restaurants. Back from the Mondragón, the Plaza del Campillo overlooks steps that zigzag down to a dramatic eye-level through the Puente Nuevo. The town's pedestrianised 'high street', calle Espinel, opposite the bullring, is nicknamed 'La Bola' and is where Rondeños go for virtually everything.

ARROYO DE LA MIEL, MALAGA


Arroyo de la Miel village of district is now absorbed into Benalmadena but it is also a small modern town in its own right with its distinctive charm. It is a real hubbub of activity.
In the centre of town that you find the train station, which connects Benalmadena with Fuengirola and Malaga. The frequent train service is used by commuters, tourists and visitors to the Tivoli World entertainment park.
Just two minutes walk from the train station is Tivoli World, largest family entertainment park on the Costa del Sol and right opposite the entrance to Tivoli World is another favourite tourist attraction on the Coast - the Telecabina (Cable Car) which goes up to the highest point in the Malaga Province.
Arroyo de la Miel has many great restaurants and bars and there is a big choice of self-catering holiday apartments. This is also a real residential town with a working population, good shopping centre, post office, banks, etc. It even has one of the very few women-only Gyms on the coast, Corpobello, which is opposite a large municipal swimming pool.
You can also find the Butterfly Park here, next to the Buddhist Stupa Temple.
