Lo Pagan is situated on the north shore of the Mar Menor and has merged with San Pedro del Pinatar to become one big town. Lo Pagan has a beautiful beach, promenade and small marina. During the summer months there is a lively funfair beside the marina which adds to the seaside atmosphere.

Lo Pagan is most famous for its mud baths. These are free, which is great news if you have a large family to keep occupied. All ages can use the mud baths from 1 to 100, but only the truly hardy indulge during the winter months. The mud baths are located at the end of the beach and the start of the salinas walking and cycling route out to sea. Simply walk down the steps, cover yourself with the therapeutic mud, said to be good for all types of skin complaints, aches and pain, dry off in the sun, then re-enter the water to wash it all off!

Places of interest & ideas of things to do in Lo Pagan

Beach: long and sandy.
Promenade: long and paved, joins into the mud baths and salinas walking and cycling route.
Marina: small.
Children's Funfair: opposite the marina open during summer months only.
Mud Baths: treat your skin!
Salinas Walking & Cycling Route: out into the Mar Menor.
Ideas of places to twin Lo Pagan with day or night

Twin a visit to the information centre in San Pedro del Pinatar with a trip to the marina and then drive the short distance to Lo Pagan for a walk along the salinas walking and cycling route that runs beside the mud baths.
Visit Cabo de Palos, Punta Brava or any of the other interesting towns and villages on the Mar Menor, end your day at the lively funfair opposite the marina for a great day out.
Take your bikes and start here at the mud baths, cycle out to sea and follow the salinas walking and cycling route around to San Pedro del Pinatar marina, complete this circular route by returning along the cycle path which runs parallel to the sand dunes.

PILAR DE LA HORADADA

Pilar de la Horadada

Pilar de la Horadada is located 3km inland from the beach at El Mojon. The resort is approximately 25 minutes drive to the north of Murcia San Javier airport and approximately one hours drive to the south of Alicante airport.

Pilar de la Horadada is ideally located close to the safe sandy beaches of the Mar Menor.

The region is largely agricultural; surrounded by market gardens, orchards, citrus groves and pastoral farms.

Beaches

The town is close to a coastline of fine sand and clear water beaches, interspersed by attractive inlets, all offering a full range of services.

The beach at Mil Palmeras is ideal for sailing enthusiasts, linking up with the Rincón and Puerto inlets; the latter with a promenade that comes alive on hot summer nights.

Las Villas, the beach behind Torre Horadada marina, is the longest beach followed by a smaller beach at La Mojón, which reaches the border with Murcia.

Excursions

The river Seco is formed by a network of channels that receive water filtrating off the fields. This peculiar environment is worthy of an excursion, one where you can the fragrant scents of herbs such as rosemary and thyme.

The visitor trail begins at El Pinar de Campoverde, where you will find informative panels explaining the flora and fauna of the region, as well as facilities for barbecues.

Another attractive tour is the water architecture route. A pleasant stroll discovering old water features such as cisterns and old wells.

Cultural attractions
There is a watchtower on the coast, typical of the many that line the Spanish Mediterranean coastline. A settlement developed around the tower, which became the summer residence for the inhabitants of Orihuela; Murcia and the Vega Baja del Segura are also both worthwhile day trips.

The Archaeological and Ethnological Museum museum has five sections, dedicated to the environment, to fossils, numismatics and ethnology. On display are the most typical flora of the municipality, a collection of metals, assault weaponry, pieces from Iberian textile mills and objects made from esparto and the typical "pilareña" dress.

Leisure & recreation
A full range of water sports is available on the coast here. The town has excellent sports facilities for athletics and football and horse riding facilities are available nearby.

Shopping
The centre of Pilar de la Horadada is a shopper’s paradise with many boutiques, pastry shops, banks and gaming salons lining the main Calle Mayor.

Cuisine

The "pilareña" gastronomy is similar to that of the rest of the region, where the presence of the sea puts its stamp on many local dishes.

Rice is a principal ingredient of the local cuisine, usually boiled in fish stock. The surrounding farms provide the fruits and vegetables of the local cuisine; excellent artichokes, peppers, beans and cauliflower’s, oranges, lemons, figs, peaches and plums, to name but a few.

"Arroz con leche" (rice pudding) is a favourite dessert, made with goat’s milk, lemon peel and cinnamon. Sweets such as "cordiales", "toñas", "mantecados" or "rollos de anis" and "milhojas" are also typical of the region, and very popular.

Eating out
After an exhausting morning shopping along the Calle Mayor, why not relax at one of the cafés in the Plaza Iglesia and watch the world go by, enjoying a few “tapas”. There are also many good “Mesones” offering the local cuisine to a very high standard.

International restaurants serve favourites from all over Europe and the rest of the world.

Climate
Pilar de la Horadada enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate, with cool sea breezes in summer and protection by surrounding mountains against the cold North winds in winter.

The area averages nearly 3,000 hours of sunshine each year and the average temperature easily exceeds 20 degrees.

In 1986 the World Health Organisation recommended the climate of the area as one of the most equitable in the world - neither too hot in the summer nor too cold in the winter. On average it can boast 325 sunny days each year making it an ideal all year round destination.

STRAIT OF GIBRALTAR

The Strait of Gibraltar (Arabic: مضيق جبل طارق‎‎, Spanish: Estrecho de Gibraltar) is a narrow strait that connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea and separates Gibraltar and Peninsular Spain in Europe from Morocco and Ceuta (Spain) in Africa. The name comes from the Rock of Gibraltar, which in turn originates from the Arabic Jebel Tariq (meaning "Tariq's mountain") named after Tariq ibn Ziyad. It is also known as the Straits of Gibraltar, the Gut of Gibraltar (although this is mostly archaic),] the STROG (Strait Of Gibraltar) in naval use, and Bab Al Maghrib (Arabic: باب المغرب‎‎), "Gate of the West". In the Middle Ages, Muslims called it Al-Zuqaq, "The Passage", the Romans called it Fretum Gatitanum (Strait of Cadiz), and in the ancient world it was known as the "Pillars of Hercules" (Ancient Greek: αἱ Ἡράκλειοι στῆλαι).

Europe and Africa are separated by 7.7 nautical miles (14.3 km; 8.9 mi) of ocean at the strait's narrowest point. The Strait's depth ranges between 300 and 900 metres (160 and 490 fathoms; 980 and 2,950 ft) which possibly interacted with the lower mean sea level of the last major glaciation 20,000 years ago when the level of the sea is believed to have been lower by 110–120 m (60–66 fathoms; 360–390 ft).
Ferries cross between the two continents every day in as little as 35 minutes. The Spanish side of the Strait is protected under El Estrecho Natural Park.

JALON, ALICANTE

Jalon

Jalon is the capital of the Jalon Valley, also known as the Vall de Pop (Pop Valley), situated beside the River Gorgos, in a plain, surrounded by the Sierra de Bernia and the Sierra del Forner mountains.
Jalon boasts some of the most magnificent scenery in Spain, with its landscape of olive and pine trees, intermingled with orange groves and vineyards and its remote villages of Jalon, Alcalali, Lliber and Parcent.

The town is located around 1 hour 15 minutes drive to the north east of Alicante airport, some 14 kilometres or about 20 minutes drive from the northern Costa Blanca town of Calpe.

History & Culture
The Jalon Valley is famous for its wines, the bodegas of Jalon produce a very fine Moscatel, as well as some excellent full bodied reds; there are several bodegas in the region that are worth a visit to sample the delicious wines.

In 1472 the Moors living in Jalón sent wines to the Valencian Court and this wine for many centuries was the base of region of Valencia’s economy: Jalón's wines belong to the 'denominación de origen' of Alicante.

Leisure and recreation
Hiking and rambling on footpaths to the Sierra de Bernia, to Penyo de la Mica, the Sierra del Forner and the Castellet (little castle) are all beautiful routes for the keen walker.

Visitors can go horse riding or quad biking in Benissa, which is 6 kilometres away.

Jalon Town
Just off the main square of Jalon there is the beautiful church of Jalon, built in a neo-classic style with its remarkable altar and blue dome. In the same square a market is held every Tuesday around the square’s fountain.

Jalon offers great shopping and some fantastic bars and bodegas to enjoy a nice glass of Jalon wine and watch the local world go by.

Excursions
For those who want to take in the natural surroundings or historical sites, excursions can be booked to the Cave of “les Maravelles” where prehistoric remains have been found; to the Bernia mountain, where the remains of the castle Forat and Font de Cabanyes fountain can be found and where you can enjoy panoramic views to the coast of Alicante.

Shopping & Markets
Jalon is a charming town with its handicraft shops, wine cellars, restaurants and places and is a great holiday spot for those who wish to lap up local culture.

The Rastro of Jalon is held each Saturday beside the river. Here you will be able to find, antique furniture amongst the wide variety of offerings. The weekly open produce market is held every Tuesday in the main square.

Cuisine
Jalon has an interesting and exciting local gastronomy. Famous for its sweets and pastries made with local almonds. Try the pastissets, mantecaos, carquinyols, mostachos and their famous bollos (pastry made with green peas).

Jalon is also famous for its sausages, still created using ancient recipes; delicious examples of Morcilla, Bufas, Longanizas, and Chorizos all go down well with a drop of local full bodied red. Jalon is rightly renowned for its robust red wines, and sweet whites, the Mistela and Moscatel.

Fiestas
There are a number of fiestas dedicated to various saints throughout the year; the fiesta of the Romero (last Saturday of April), the Moors and Christians (last Sunday of July), the fiestas of Santo Domingo (the 4th of August) and the fiestas of the Virgin Pobre (third Monday of October).

Leisure Trips
Approximately 45 minutes by car you can visit the Water Parks of Benidorm (Aqualandia, Mundomar, Terra Mítica) and a 30 minute drive will take you to the Safari Park Vergel, you can also visit the coves of Benidoleig and the Valley of Ebo.

Golf
There is a wide choice of golf courses to suit every ability within an hours drive of Jalon.

Climate
The Jalon Valley enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate, it can get very hot during the summer and in the winter the area is protected against the cold north winds by the surrounding mountains.

JANUARY IN MALAGA

January tends to be a calmer month in Malaga as the Christmas holidays wind down, but nevertheless, it’s a great time to visit the city!
One of the things we love about living in Spain is that the holidays don’t end on New Year’s Day. We celebrate Three Kings Day on January the 6th, which brings with it all the festivities of gifts, good food and family. There are lots of things to do in Malaga in January, so here are our best picks.

Enjoy the celebration of Three Kings Day.

On the fifth of January across Spain you will find parades in anticipation of the arrival of the Three Kings. The parades are often huge affairs complete with floats, bands and lots of candy for the children. If you will be in Malaga for Three Kings Day, it is well worth a trip downtown to see the parade.

The festive atmosphere is lots of fun and you can top off your evening with a slice of the traditional Roscón de Reyes. The next morning on January sixth, most Spanish families exchange their gifts, so join the festivities in Malaga and hope that the Three Kings have brought you some nice gifts too!

New Year, New Things To Do In Malaga In January!

We celebrate Three Kings Day on January the 6th, which brings with it all the festivities of gifts, good food and family. There are lots of fun things to do in Malaga in January. After Christmas come the Three Kings and then the big sales. Not to mention some great shows and events!

Enjoy the celebration of Three Kings Day.

The next morning on January sixth, most Spanish families exchange their gifts, so join the festivities in Malaga and hope that the Three Kings have brought you some nice gifts too!

One of the best things to do in Malaga in January is celebrate Three Kings Day. This delicious Roscon de Reyes is the traditional cake. If you get a piece with the hard lima bean inside, it means you'll be footing the bill!

Take advantage of the sales!

If you will be visiting Malaga soon after the Christmas celebrations end, you’re in luck! This is one of the biggest sale seasons of the year and many of the stores have great deals. We suggest shopping during the week when there are fewer people at the stores, or trying some of the smaller shops, like the vintage stores or independently run boutiques in the center.

Sample some local craft beer

There is something about January that invites you to spend a bit more time indoors (although the weather in Málaga is generally mild). There is a bit of a more humid chill in the air that gets us in the mood for a good craft beer with friends on a Friday after work. If you enjoy trying different craft beers, this is one of the best things to do in Malaga in January.

See the Cirque du Soleil

By now everyone’s heard of the beautiful acrobatic circus performance that is Cirque du Soleil. And in January they are bringing the “Varekai” show to Malaga. It’s a great chance to enjoy a magical evening with the family while you are in Malaga. The Cirque du Soleil will be in town January 21st-24th and tickets are already on sale, so get yours quick and enjoy this interesting performance!

All that jazz

Maybe it’s just us, but we’ve always thought that winter was the perfect time to head out to a jazz club. There’s something about a darkened room, music that seems to vibrate down to your bones and a nice drink in hand is our perfect plan for a weekend night. We suggest Clarence Jazz Club or The Wall at the Hotel Vincci.

Take a food tour!

We don’t close up shop in the wintertime, so make sure you let us know when you are going to be here and come along on one of our delicious food tours!

It’s a 3.5 hour experience which involves exploring the streets of Malaga’s historic center, trying some of our delicious local specialties, and sampling wines from Malaga’s two wine regions, all in the company of an expert local guide!
