ANDALUCIA WEATHER

Andalucía is located in the south of Spain on the Costa del Sol, or the ‘sunshine coast’. The large region is home to well-known destinations such as Seville, Granada and Malaga. As its name suggests, the coast is particularly sunny for most of the year. On average Andalucía and the surrounding regions receive a total of three thousand hours of sunlight each year.
The region has a typically Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and mild winters, however the Cabo de Gata region, located in Andalucía on the south-eastern Mediterranean coastline, is dry all year around and is the only region of Europe with a desert climate.
Despite this, rainfall in Andalucía does increase quickly from summer to winter. There have been a few episodes of flash floods in recent times, and the area has been put on storm alert in the past.
Andalucía is what most people think of when they think of typical Spain; the weather is hot and sunny and it is one of the few regions that still participate in typical Spanish traditions such as bull-fighting and flamenco. This makes it an extremely popular holiday destination, especially for those seeking reliably hot sunshine and a tan during the summer season. Summer is the most popular time to visit Andalucía to relax on the beaches near the coast and soak up the sun.
While the weather in spring and autumn is cooler and there’s less sunshine than the summer, the region receives visitors all year round. Outside of peak season, the quieter spring and autumn months are good times of the year to visit the various tourist attractions of Andalucía including the numerous beautiful buildings.

SUMMER

Summer is peak tourism season in Andalucía and the best time of year to visit if you’re looking for great weather. In summer, the sun is practically a guarantee, with 12 glorious hours in July and 11 hours in June and August.
If you’re on the hunt for hot and dry beach weather, the best time to go to Andalucía would be July or August, as rainfall in these months averages at only 1-5mm, which is virtually non-existent. In fact, the whole of summer is generally very dry with just 9mm of rain in June.
Summer is also the hottest time of the year in the region. Average temperatures reach 28°C in mid-summer but often peak to sweltering highs of 36°C which can feel very hot indeed. Temperatures can get even hotter than this on some occasions; the official record in Andalucía for the hottest temperature is 46.5°C, peaking in the cities of Sevilla, Morón and Córdoba. The coast is generally cooler thanks to sea breezes.
As a result of these high temperatures and abundance of sunshine, Andalucía and the Costa del Sol is one of Spain’s most popular regions for beach holidays. The beaches of Malaga and Marbella on the Mediterranean coast offers swimming and fine sands - perfect if the holiday you are looking for involves a lot of relaxing on the beach! However, if the weather gets too hot in the summer, holiday makers can cool down in one of the area’s many attractions and explore historical wonders such as the Alhambra in Granada.

AUTUMN

Arriving at the end of September, the autumn weather in Andalucía remains almost as good as the summer months, however, temperatures are starting to drop and sunshine levels are decreasing towards winter. It’s still a great time to visit Andalucía if you’re looking for good weather and less crowds of tourists though. Temperatures average around 20°C in October and fall to an average of 15°C in November, although highs can still reach a pleasant 26°C. There’s 6-7 hours of sunshine in autumn.
Autumn is a popular season to travel to Andalucía even though showers are more likely to come during this month. Rainfall increases steeply from 25mm in September to 66mm in October, so holiday makers should be prepared for the chance of wet weather.
Winter
One of the great things about Andalucía is that the forecast is almost always sunny, even in winter! There’s still around 5-6 hours of sunshine throughout the winter season.
Winter temperatures are much cooler than the summer months, but much warmer than other parts of Europe, which makes Andalucía a popular winter sun destination. Average temperatures are between 11°C and 12°C from December to February, while highs can reach between 15°C and 17°C. However, temperatures do vary throughout the region. The highest winter temperature would be found in Seville which can reach up to 26°C and the lowest temperature would be in Grenada which is around 7°C.
This season has the highest levels of rainfall which is due to the weather systems sweeping in from the west. In recent years, January received three times as much rainfall than the average in the last thirty years, and some parts of Cadiz received 200mm of rain. On average though, there’s around 76mm of rain in December falling to 59mm by February. This season is best for the tourists who don’t want to sunbathe and don’t mind the slight chance of rain.
It has been known to snow in January in Andalucía, but this is not very common and has only ever been a light coating. Plus with the breath-taking scenery that Andalucía has to offer seeing it in snow would not be a disappointment.

SPRING

Spring occurs between March and May in Andalucía and is the transition period between winter and summer. During spring, the weather is typically warm with a strong breeze in the air which cools temperatures slightly. Average temperatures range from 15°C in March to 20°C in May, however temperatures can reach a balmy 27°C at the end of May. This is perfect for sightseers and holiday makers as it is not too hot to spend all day wandering around the glorious features of Andalucía but it is still hot enough to get that healthy tan.
Sunshine levels are starting to increase in spring, with 6 hours in March rising to 10 hours in May. Visitors should be aware that there’s also a good chance of some spring time showers in Andalucía at this time of year. March is the wettest month of the year, with 90mm of rainfall, but things will start to dry up come May.

FLAMENCO IN MARBELLA

Shrouded in mystery for many years, Flamenco is a type of traditional Spanish music and dance that many tourists will have encountered on a trip to Spain at one point or another. However, most don’t realise its origins or the history behind this passionate and fiery art form. The word Flamenco only came into use when the first Flamenco schools began in Cadiz during the 18th Century, but the music and dancing began many years before. For hundreds of years Spanish abuelas (grandmothers) have passed on stories, to their grandchildren, of gypsies and their colourful music and dancing all steeped in romance and folklore but the truth of the matter is, nobody really knows when Flamenco originated.

To be able to perform Flamenco many say you must have the special duende (spirit) and only some of us have it. It is the life and soul of Southern Spain with modern styles including dance, guitar and song all accompanied by palmas, the seemingly very complicated handclapping.

Fans worldwide have only recently started to understand this art form and now many countries are starting their own Flamenco academies - Japan has more now than Spain!

Professional flamenco dancers can command very large audiences and are very popular in Spanish culture. The most famous Flamenco ‘artists’ include the late Camaron de la Isla who produced a number of best-selling songs during his extensive career and his most famous ‘Como el Agua’ is sung by Flamenco artists all over the world.

When you’re visiting Marbella, experiencing Flamenco is a definite must – exciting, amazing and sometimes awe-inspiring, a Flamenco show can be the cherry on top of an already fabulous holiday here. If you happen to be here during the weeks that the Ferias take place along the coast then you will be able to get a glimpse into this Andalucian tradition – with women dressed in colourful gypsy dresses and couples dancing sevillanas in the most dramatic and hot-blooded way.

There are many venues that you can see a show whether it’s to join in and try out the dancing yourself or enjoy a sumptuous meal with a Flamenco show.  La Plaza Restaurant in Riviera has Flamenco on most Wednesday and Saturday nights and if you want great cuisine and a lively atmosphere this is the venue for you. The group performing are in perfect time with each other and will have you gawping in amazement at their dancing and clapping… if you are sitting near the stage be prepared to join in as they ask for volunteers at the interval.

Tablao Flamenco Ana Maria has been putting on Flamenco shows since 1991and have had many great performers over the years – they also offer guests the chance to try out this passionate dance with a class, sample sumptuous traditional tapas and see the professionals at work.  Puro Beach in Laguna Village, Estepona is hosting Flamenco Nights every Wednesday where diners can enjoy a special dinner menu for just €35 and one of the best flamenco performances in the south of Spain.

If this inspires you to get into the Latin spirit and take up dancing, then pop along to the Marbella Dance School or La Clave Dance School and learn some new moves with a little Spanish flavour!

EL CAMINITO DEL REY , MALAGA

El Caminito del Rey (English: The King's little pathway) is a walkway, pinned along the steep walls of a narrow gorge in El Chorro, near Ardales in the province of Málaga, Spain. The name is often shortened to Camino del Rey (English: King's pathway). The walkway had fallen into disrepair and was partially closed for over a decade. After four years of extensive repairs and renovations, the walkway re-opened in 2015. It has been known in the past as the "world's most dangerous walkway" following five deaths in 1999 and 2000.

The walkway was built to provide workers at the hydroelectric power plants at Chorro Falls and Gaitanejo Falls with a means to cross between them, to provide for transport of materials, and to facilitate inspection and maintenance of the channel. The construction began in 1901 and was finished in 1905. King Alfonso XIII crossed the walkway in 1921 for the inauguration of the dam Conde del Guadalhorce and it became known by its present name. The walkway is 1 metre (3 ft) in width, and rises over 100 metres (330 ft) above the river below.

Traversing a collapsed section in 2006
The original path was constructed of concrete and rested on steel rails supported by stanchions built at around 45 degrees into the rock face. It deteriorated over the years and there were numerous sections where part or all of the concrete top had collapsed. The result was large open-air gaps bridged only by narrow steel beams or other supports. Few of the original handrails existed although a safety wire ran the length of the path. Several people lost their lives on the walkway and, after two fatal accidents in 1999 and 2000, the local government closed both entrances. Even so, in the 4 years to 2013, four people died attempting to climb the gorge.[3]

The regional government of Andalusia and the local government of Málaga agreed in June 2011 to share costs of restoration (including car parking and a museum) of €9 million. The project took approximately three years to complete.[4] Many of the original features remained in place.[5]

In March 2014, the cornerstone of the rehabilitation project was laid by specialized alpinists.[6] The walkway reopened on 29 March 2015 and was listed in the best new attractions for 2015 by Lonely Planet. Route description and GPS track is available in Wikiloc with information, photos, and videos to help visitors.

PUERTO BANUS NIGHT LIFE

Marbella is one of the most famous places in Europe for its glamorous nightlife scene, however, many of the most exclusive venues can be found in Puerto Banus. The club-going crowd here tends to dress up in their most glamorous outfits and highest heels. Don't be surprised if you see a reality TV star or two dancing the night away!

The majority of the bars are located along Calle Ribera and along the second line, open until late at night. There are also several other clubs in other locations: TIBU in Plaza Antonio Banderas, Pangea at the end of the marina next to the tower and Sleek and Aqwa Mist which are just on the other side of the Autovia Mediterraneo.

CASINO

Casino Nueva Andalucia, Andalucia Plaza Hotel
Vast casino. Live show during the summer. Part of the Andalucia Plaza Hotel. Open Monday to Thursday 8pm to 4am and Friday and Saturday 8pm - 5am. GO WILD ABOUT THE MALAGA COUNTRYSIDE

Head inland from anywhere on the Costa del Sol and you can be driving along empty mountain roads in less than half an hour.
Throughout the hills of the province of Málaga, olive mills, stables and farmhouses have been turned into rustic yet stylish restaurants, hotels and holiday homes, bringing forgotten areas back to life.
For a change of scene from the coastal resorts, spend a day hiking or cycling in the hills, breathing in the fresh mountain air. Or hire a car for a few days to travel across the province and discover some of Málaga’s lesser-known corners for yourself.
For a quick idea of just how beautiful the countryside is in this part of Andalucia, just drive into the Sierra de Bermeja from Estepona or the Sierra de las Nieves from Marbella. You are soon in a landscape of pinsapo fir trees and may have to stop the car to let a herd of goats pass by.
As you go higher towards the Serranía de Ronda, look up and you may be lucky enough to spot an eagle. Stop for a coffee in Casares, Gaucín or Benalauria, just a few of the pretty pueblos blancos (white towns) in the region.
The historic town of Ronda is a popular day trip from the Costa del Sol, which is hardly surprising given its dramatic location, spanning the breathtaking El Tajo gorge. It has always been a magnet for writers and poets: Ernest Hemingway was attracted to its bullring, which is one of the oldest in Spain.
Ronda is even more magical at night and early in the morning, however, so try to stay overnight if possible.
Driving north from the city of Málaga, you are soon in the Montes de Málaga, gentle hills that are excellent for walking or birdwatching. A little further to the north you come to El Torcal, an area of great botanic interest that is characterised by extraordinary limestone formations and dramatic ravines. The rocks have been honed by the elements into eerie shapes that look more like man-made sculptures than something created by nature. The area is now a popular spot for climbing and paragliding, as well as for canyoning.
Nearby is Antequera, which has an astonishingly rich heritage. If you don’t want to drive, you can get there in half an hour by train from Málaga. It was established in the Bronze Age, vestiges of which remain in caves and dolmens around the town. Its hilltop fortress was later a strategic vantage point for Roman, Arab and Christian rulers. Just let your imagination run riot as you walk around it today, gazing for miles across the surrounding plains.
The town is packed with extravagantly decorated Renaissance and Baroque churches, convents and mansions and you could easily spend a whole day there, particularly as there are plenty of restaurants and shops, too.
North-west of Antequera, Fuente de Piedra Lagoon is home to thousands of pink flamingoes, which is an amazing sight, while a short drive east is the pretty little town of Archidona. With its unusual 18th-century octagonal main square, the Plaza Ochavada, authentic tapas bars and friendly atmosphere, it is a lovely place for an overnight stop.
Heading south-east you enter the mountainous area of La Axarquía, which is remarkably undeveloped considering how close it is to Málaga and the coast. The upper reaches are still quite wild; just a century or so ago this was bandit country. Olive groves cover the hillsides, producing superbly fragant oils which you can buy direct from the mills in the various villages.
Further south, avocados drip from the trees, along with custard apples, loquats, peaches and mangos, the crops varying with the altitude.
On the lower slopes, nearer the sea, vineyards stretch across the landscape. Unique to the area are the rectangular plots on the hillside which are used to dry the grapes in the sunshine before they are turned into the sweet wines for which the Axarquía is renowned.
The area was originally settled by the Phoenicians, followed by the Romans and Arabs, whose influence is still discernible in the tiny villages hidden in the valleys, invisible until you are nearly upon them. One of the prettiest villages is Salares, where the church bell tower dates back to the 13th century. With its intricate geometric tracery, it resembles a minaret and the church was indeed originally a mosque. Other beautiful villages are Competa and Frigiliana.
It is hard to believe that the beaches of the eastern end of the Costa del Sol are a short drive away, but if you feel like a sunbathe, you could be running down to the Mediterranean in the late afternoon sun, which is always a pretty good way to end the day.

MALAGA CITY

Picturesquely situated in a bay surrounded by mountains and bounded by the rivers Guadalmedina and Guadalhorce, Malaga with its two thousand-eight hundred years of history is one of the oldest cities in Europe.

The city experienced the greatest civilizations of the Mediterranean, from the Phoenicians and the Greeks to the Romans, thanks to the strategic location of the port, an important site along the trade routes since ancient times.

This introduction is to say that Malaga is not only the capital of the Costa del Sol, a destination known throughout the world since the beginning of the tourist boom in this area, where the climate, the sea, beaches and golf courses represent an irresistible attraction for national and international tourists. If you plan to spend your holidays in Malaga or surroundings, dedicate at least one day to visit the city.

The centre of Malaga is a place where you can spend hours and return to visit without ever getting bored; there’s so much to see that it’s impossible to even enumerate. Malaga is rich in culture, modernity and historical monuments. It’s a cosmopolitan city, capital of the Costa del Sol and with a history that dates back to the Phoenician times when it was founded, and later on passed onto the Greeks, Romans and Arabs, who left us part of their culture and constructions. Malaga was finally conquered by the Catholic Kings in 1487, leaving us an incomplete cathedral due to the lack of funds back then, known as ‘La Manquita’.

Of its even further past we must mention several monuments to visit, highlighting the Alcazaba Arabic Castle and the Gibralfaro castle with beautiful gardens located by the coast.

Apart from the above mentioned, Malaga is the city of Pablo Picasso’s birthplace, and the square where he used to play as a child still exists today, as well as his house which is now a museum that we can visit during our stay in Malaga.

Malaga has the second biggest port in Spain, recently modernised and is now also a great place to spend a day’s shopping.

If we visit Malaga we cannot go without visiting the surrounding villages, like Torremolinos for example, a well-known and popular touristic town that had its boom in the 1960’s and where an endless number of movies were filmed. Visiting its villages we’ll discover more of Malaga, as well as enjoying a wide variety of services and attractions for the tourist: golf lessons, theatre, flamenco, restaurants, tapas bars, etc..

The infrastructure makes Malaga an ideal city to make it our starting point from where to start exploring Andalusia, with great access by road to Granada, Seville and Cordoba, that will make life easier if we decide to hire a car in Malaga, or if we travel in our own vehicle.
