SPAIN CLIMATE AND TYPICAL TEMPERATURE

The southern Spain climate is similar to a warm Mediterranean climate. Hot days, cool nights with rainy springs and dry summers.

The typical weather varies depending in which part of the country you are in. It is diverse because of its proximity to the sea and its altitude and its mountainous areas.

Northern Spain and southern Spain is quite different, with the central and Atlantic coast having many similarities. Southern Spain climate is similar to that of a warm Mediterranean region. It is warm, a tad humid, and does get cool at night. It has high sunshine levels. Sometimes hot winds from north Africa flow to this area but sea breezes often halt the temperature from rising too much.

Winters are extremely mild compared to the rest of the country. However, The Mountains in the central part of Spain receive heavy snow in the winter on the sierras. It is usually cooler in the mountain towns, like Ronda because of the elevation.

Andalusia is located in both central Spain and south Spain. Andalusia has some of the hottest temperatures recorded, and Seville could be argued as one of the hottest cities.

South Spain Temperature and Seasons
The summers are from June to august, fall is September to November, and winter December through February. Spring is March through May.

January is the coldest month and July is the hottest.

Average temperature in January: 50F / 10C
Average temperature in February: 55F / 12C
Average temperature in March: 60F / 15C
Average temperature in April: 65F / 17C
Average temperature in May: 70F / 19C
Average temperature in June: 78F / 23C
Average temperature in July: 88F / 27C
Average temperature in August: 87F / 26C
Average temperature in September: 78F / 23C
Average temperature in October: 66F / 22C
Average temperature in November: 60F / 15C
Average temperature in December: 55F / 12C
Keep in mind that Seville is probably the hottest city in the region, its averages are a bit higher.

Much of their heat is dependent upon the sun. It does drop to cool temperatures at night, even in the heat of the summer.

The Sunshine in Andalusia

Andalusia is extremely sunny and there are only a few days without sunshine. I have heard locals call it the “country of sun”. On average, January and February average around 6 hours of sun a day. March has 7, April has 8, and May has 9 hours of sun a day. June is about 10 and July is the sunniest month at 12 hours a day. In August, the sun starts to decrease at 11 hours, September has 8, October and November average 6. December has the least amount of sun averaging at 5 hours of sunshine per day.

The Rain

Average rainfall can be heavy in early spring but is pretty dry in the summer, with July and August having a very low average of precipitation. The rainiest months are October and February, with an average of 3 inches of rainfall. The rest of the months have a moderate average between 1 and 2 inches of rain a month. July and August are the driest, so if you want to steer clear of any precipitation, this would be the time to travel. Beware though, these are also the hottest.

Northern Spain climate
If you happen to be traveling to the south of Spain but are also curious about the temperature and Spain climate in the mid to northern part of the country, it is not similar to the south. It is the wettest and cloudiest part of Spain. While it does have warm and sunny weather, the sunshine is not as great as the central and south regions. Their sunshine levels average between 2 and 8 hours per day.

The best time to travel based on temperature
I think the best time to travel based on the Spain climate is probably march through may, and September through November. If you really want it hot out because you are going to the beach, you might find the summer months tolerable. It just depends on your preference. Because the spring is the prettiest with the best temperature, it is high season and is more expensive. If you can swing going at this time, it’s totally worth it.

MARBELLA

Marbella is known as a glamorous resort town and is a favourite location with the rich and famous, boosted by foreign residents who are seduced by the lifestyle. But there's plenty for ordinary folk to see and enjoy too in southern Spain's answer to St Tropez.

The old town with its narrow cobbled streets and flower-filled plazas is packed with delightful shops and art galleries selling pretty clothes and accessories, and handmade wares. One of the prettiest spots is the fabled orange tree-filled Plaza de los Naranjos, which is located just off the main street and is home to the 16th-century town hall and tourist office, where you can pick up a detailed map and other visitor information. For more contemporary fashions, Puerto Banus has all the top international designer stores.

Marbella's history stretches back to Roman times - you can see beautifully preserved mosaics at a villa and baths near the town.
In terms of eating out, Marbella's gastronomic scene is second to none, with everything from vegetarian and vegan cafes, to beachfront chiringuitos, and Michelin-starred restaurants including Spanish cooking star Dani Garcia's - a feast for foodies.
And of course the beaches are second to none - most visitors come to Marbella to enjoy the sun, sea and sand, which has been drawing expatriate communities since the 1950s when Prince Alfonso de Hohenlohe fell in love with the place and built a beachfront house, drawing all the starriest Hollywood celebs.
If your visit inspires you to consider living in Marbella, have a look at the neighbourhoods or districts that make this such a charming place to live or perhaps visit on an excursion and decide afterwards. Don't miss Puerto Banus.

PASSION REIGNS IN ALICANTE AT EASTER

The Spanish are passionate people, particularly when it comes to culture, food and their traditions. A chance to see all three working in harmony is during Easter, which is one of the most important fiestas in Spain and offers a fascinating insight to Alicante culture. It's a chance to witness dramatic processions, great works of art and enjoy a fitting feast as you celebrate Easter weekend.

The silence is unbearable. You catch your breath as you try not to make a noise. Thousands of people line the streets, but no-one says a word. Then the sound of marching feet fills the air. It's the only thing you can hear. Thousands of penitents parade in complete silence. It's dark too. The only light is from the lanterns of the people marching by, which add to the sombre and somewhat eerie situation. It's very emotional and some people are choking up at the dramatic scene unfolding before their eyes.

This scene has been played out in Orihuela every Easter Thursday since 1940 when a group of residents decided to hold the silent parade to provide an atmosphere of austerity, contemplation and meditation.

This is Easter in Spain. A fitting reminder that Easter is not just about eggs and bunnies; Spain celebrates Easter week with much more dignity than many other countries. It is one of the most important events in the Christian calendar and Spain treats it with the respect it deserves.

People carry enormous statues of saints on wooden platforms, which have been lovingly created by great artists throughout the centuries. There is an atmosphere of mourning, which can seem oppressive to onlookers, particularly when you see many penitents in hooded cloaks with just slits for their eyes. The mood lightens on Easter Sunday, with church bells ringing throughout the land as the Resurrection of Christ is celebrated.

The story of Christ's crucifixion and resurrection is re-enacted with much pomp and ceremony in many towns throughout the country. However, two of the best places to spend Easter are in the Alicante region - Elche and Orihuela - just a few kilometres apart.

Parades of palms

Elche, a city of 200,000 palms (and counting), is the ideal place to see the Palm Sunday processions. The fiesta begins on Palm Sunday, which is a week before Easter Sunday, to commemorate the arrival of Jesus in Jerusalem.

Hundreds of people take part in Elche's procession, all carrying figures which have been handcrafted from white palms produced in the city. This is one of the few places where the tradition of crafting the fronds lives on. The fronds are plaited into intricate figures which take pride of place in the parade.

This has become one of the most important ceremonies held in Elche and has been declared to be of international tourist interest. However, it dates back to the late 14th century and involves hundreds of families carrying the palms to keep this great tradition alive.

On Palm Sunday morning, the palms are blessed before the procession begins in the old city, meandering around the old squares and across bridges before arriving at the Basilica de Santa Maria.

While in Elche for the procession, you can visit the Elche Palmeral to see the thousands of palm trees, where many of the world's palms are produced for this special day. It is the largest palm grove in Europe and is also home to the Imperial Palm which have seven stems, resembling candelabra. If you have time, visit the Huerto San Placido (Palmeral museum) where you can find out about the traditions and history behind the palm craft and procession.

Orihuela honours Jesus

Orihuela is a fantastic place to spend the Easter weekend. The processions are a fascinating and moving mix of emotions, drama, religion and great art. The tradition dates back almost 500 years and is so spectacular it has been declared to be of international tourist interest. Of particular note are the 18th century sculptures by Francisco Salzillo from Murcia and the She-Devil, the Diablesa, sculpted by Nicolas de Bussy.

This is a very emotional time in Orihuela, particularly for the silent procession on Thursday night, as previously mentioned. The ceremonies date back several centuries and have been mentioned in works by the novelist Gabriel Miro and poet Miguel Hernandez.

On Good Friday the streets of Orihuela are converted into the ‘Way of the Cross’, representing the Passion of Christ. Bands of men carry enormous, impressive sculptures on their shoulders. These amazing works of art tell the story of Easter. Try to get a close look because the figures are very expressive. The different brotherhoods carry banners as they make their way through the historic streets of the city.

On Saturday, the Diablesa (She-Devil) makes her appearance in the evening's procession. This re-enactment represents the triumph of the Cross over the three enemies of the soul - the world, the devil and the flesh.

The mood lifts on Easter Sunday and Monday as Christ's resurrection is celebrated. The mood is joyful, the music is more cheerful for the processions and the participants throw sweets to the children.

If you want a closer look at the sculptures and costumes which make Easter such a moving event in Orihuela, you can visit the Easter museum. Many of the religious images, statues and costumes are found here, including works by Salzillo.

Food for a fiesta

Now that the 40 days of Lent are over, it's time for a feast. One treat is the special Easter cake called La Mona de Pascua, which is highly-decorated and highly-addictive. Coca de Pascua is another popular Easter cake, which you can find in most supermarkets and bakeries.

As in many other European countries, lamb is a popular choice for Easter Sunday dinner. It is often marinated in olive oil, garlic, lemon and parsley and roasted in the oven with sliced potatoes underneath to catch the juices. Potaje (stew) with cod and chickpeas is also widely eaten at this time. If the weather is good, out comes the paella pan for an al-fresco lunch, particularly in the Alicante region.

The most important thing after 40 days of fasting is to have fun!

BEAUTIFUL MORAIRA

Moraira is small coastal town situated in the beautiful mountainous north-eastern tip of the Costa Blanca. The resort is conveniently placed between the airports of Alicante and Valencia (about 90km from each).

The surrounding region has a quiet and relaxing atmosphere, with beautiful and unspoilt scenery and many small villages to explore.

The town itself has pleasantly grown from a small fishing village to an attractive holiday and retirement resort, retaining its considerable charm that attracts visitors from all over Europe. It’s also particularly popular with Spanish holidaymakers from Madrid and Valencia.

Moraira has an impressive marina, an excellent variety of local shops, markets, harbourside fish restaurants and bars and best of all has still managed to preserve its Spanish character.

Beaches

The two main local sandy beaches, gently shelve away into the Mediterranean Sea; both have been awarded the prestigious EEC Blue Flags for cleanliness and are well-tended and very safe for family bathing.

Leisure & recreation
Tennis, football, squash, all water sports, boat hire and trips, horse-riding, go-kart racing tracks for both adults and children, a small fairground and three good night-clubs for all ages are all available in Moraira.

Golf
Three large golf courses can be enjoyed within a few minutes drive from Moraira.

Eating out
Moraira offers plenty of good quality restaurants, including eight Michelin recommended restaurants in the immediate area, three of which are star rated and not too expensive.

Excursions
Easily reached by car are some larger towns which are well worth visiting: Javea, Calpe, Denia and Altea are all within 15km, while Benidorm is about 30km away.
There are many places of interest to see on day excursions, apart from the other coastal resorts there is also the spectacular inland and mountainous environments to discover including the wonderful mountain-top fortress of Guadalest, the Vergal Safari Park near Denia, Europe’s largest palm forest at Elche and the ancient city of Murcia.

Valencia (third largest city in Spain) is one and a half hours away and Barcelona (second largest) and the capital Madrid are both four hours away and can all be reached on the excellent motorway.

Spain's answer to Euro Disney – Port Adventura – near Barcelona, is about four and a half hours away.

Markets

If you like open markets then, aside from the weekly Friday market held next to the beach, you could plan a visit evey day of the week to the various markets held in neighbouring towns and villages.

Apart from enjoying the buzzing Spanish activity, you can buy some excellent, cheap fresh fruit and vegetables, local specialities, herbs and spices, leather goods, clothes, rugs, fresh and silk flowers, souvenirs, pottery and a whole variety of other goods.

Fiestas
As in all of Spain there are numerous fiestas (festivals) held throughout the year in the region; with specific festivals held in April, June, July and November in Moraira itself.

Locals
The local people of Moraira are extremely friendly and patient with foreign visitors, not surprising, as aside from agriculture, they depend on tourism for their livelihood.

With a large European resident community existent, there is a pleasant international feel to the area. Most people are pleased to speak English with you and even more pleased if a small attempt to speak Spanish is made.

Climate
Moraira enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate, with cool sea breezes in summer and protection by surrounding mountains against the cold North winds in winter. The area averages nearly 3,000 hours of sunshine each year and the average temperature easily exceeds 20 degrees.

In 1986 the World Health Organisation recommended the climate of the area as one of the most equitable in the world - neither too hot in the summer nor too cold in the winter. On average it can boast 325 sunny days each year making it an ideal all year-roun

BEAUTIFUL JAVEA

Overview

Javea is located in the Spanish Alicante region on the Costa Blanca. With its white beaches and gentle Mediterranean breezes (this sounds a lot like a tourist brochure but it´s true!) it´s easy to see why Javea is referred to as “the jewel in the crown of the Costa Blanca”. As well as that tasty little title, Jave is also called the Dawn of Spain (Amanacer de Espana). It´s three headlands are the first place to catch the sun in Spain each morning. Worth a look if you´re an early riser or a late partygoer.

Getting There

Javea is halfway between Valencia and Alicante airports. If you use the toll roads (these are motorways) it will take you about an hour to reach either one of these. Allow just under two hours if you take the longer routes.

Expats

Javea has been popular with English-speaking expats since the 1970s and is now home to roughly 13,000 UK and US emigres. This means that there are a decent number of business and personal networks for newcomers to join, and the huge tourist populations in summer keep Javea well-equipped with English-speaking facilities: Not just tourist offices and other handy services, but also doctors, dentists, electricians and so on.

Schools
As well as the public and private Spanish schools, Javea has an international school that offers the British curriculum to its students. The Lady Elizabeth School (http://www.theladyelizabethschool.com/) is coed, non-boarding and caters for kids from three to eighteen years old. It´s well located in Casco San Juan, right near the town centre of Javea.

Getting Around

If you move to Javea, no matter what your environmental principles: Get a car. Public transport is basically non-existent and if you are not spending all of your time in the town or on the beach (both of these being easily navigable on foot), you will need access to private transport. It would be great if Spain had a German-style network of trains, buses and metros but the fact is that it just doesn´t. There´s no point moaning about it, as so many do, just accept that fact that you will need wheels (motorscooters are a great option if you are daring enough) and get on with arranging them.

Settling In

For expats who relocate to idyllic seaside towns like Javea, it is easy to become a little resentful of the tourists who spoil your peace and quiet in summer. This is a mistake that many of us have made – and it really is a mistake. Apart from wasting your summer on feeling disgruntled, you may also be resenting your next neighbour: Enough tourists end up becoming expats that it is your best interests to remember your manners. Also, the tourist dollar keeps towns like Javea alive, so try not to be too dismissive when you see bewildered tourists making the same mistakes you once did.

Property

Prices vary greatly in Javea, but the best examples to give you an idea of the range are a three bedroom apartment with a communal swimming pool for 200,000 Euro or a two bedroom villa (detached house) with its own pool on a normal sized suburban block for 325,000 Euro. For renting, most three bedroom apartments are rented out from around 750 euros per
